BABY BOOMER AMERICAN GOULASH

(Don't mistake this for true Hungarian Goulash..it's not the exact same, but it is very good!  This is what many of us Boomers grew up on, and it probably was called many different names. When you don't have much time and want a tasty trip down memory lane, go for this old classic.)

1/2 pound elbow macaroni

1 1/2 pounds ground beef

1/2 green bell pepper, chopped

1 small onion, chopped

1 (28-ounce) jar good spaghetti sauce

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1 cup (4 ounces) shredded Cheddar cheese

Cook macaroni according to package directions; drain and cover to keep warm.

In a large skillet, brown the ground beef, bell pepper, and onion over high heat for 6 to 8 minutes, or until no pink remains in the beef, stirring frequently. Drain off excess liquid.

Add macaroni, spaghetti sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper; mix well. Reduce heat to medium-low and let simmer 5 to 7 minutes, or until heated through. Sprinkle with cheese and simmer 1 to 2 minutes, or until cheese is melted; serve.

Mine is the same as ciao-bella except I use broken spaghetti and a can of petite diced tomatoes.  The rest is the same but I will say this dish is nothing without the diced green peppers.

Re: GOULASH - GOOD COLD WEATHER DISH

I have never ate Goulash. Had to open the post so I could see what's in it. I know DH would eat that but me not so much.

I started having upset stomach when I eat too much oregano, garlic & now sometimes onions? When this happens I don't want to eat those things anymore.

@ciao_bella  This is VERY similar to what I have cooking in my crockpot right now.  I planned to cooked my macaroni and then add to the pot.

Thanks for posting!

@RedTop  I will check out that thread on the Kitchen forum.  Thanks for mentioning.

@Nightowlz

I just don't like oregano!  I make sure that it is not the first or second ingredient listed on the Italian Seasoning I buy.

Cooking the onion till translucent seems to make it easier to digest!

I have tummy problems and I was able to eat this one.  I bought Roma tomatoes (less acid).  Garlic is optional.

Using tomato soup instead of tomato sauce gives it a milder flavor.

Goulash is just that Goulash!  Simply Ground meat, tomatoes and macaroni seasoned any way you like it!

Always yummy!

Yes, we use the same ingredients as ciao bella, but call it American Chop Suey. Comfort food if ever there was. Delicious!
