Frozen Turkey Breast--how to cook

[ Edited ]

Have never prepared a turkey breast.   Was at Costco a few days ago and casually looking at a freezer case that contained them.  Another shopper reached in, grabbed two of them and asked me if I'd ever tried them.

She said she was back to buy two after just fixing one a few days before.

I told her that her recommendation had  just sold me on getting a turkey breast.  How do you all prepare these and make sure they turn out moist and tasty?

Re: Frozen Turkey Breast--how to cook

We buy turkey breast from Costco every year for Thanksgiving. The one we get is not frozen. It is the Kirkland brand and is sealed in plastic. There is no bone, just solid meat. It is so easy to prepare, just put in roasting pan with 1/4 cup of water. It is delicious and moist and very inexpensive. Most of the family only eats white meat. I started buying it about 10 years ago and have.never looked back.

There are instructions on the wrapper but you can also look at the butterball dot com website.

I have a three-ring binder of saved recipes dedicated to cooking poultry, incluiding  turkey breast.  Just wondered if anyone had a unique way of seasoning it and oven-roasting.

Does anyone use a cooking bag for oven-roasting?  I vaguely recall trying that years ago, and I think the meat turned out pale, instead of browned nicely.

Basically cook it like you would a whole turkey. Defrost it in the refrigerator for a couple of days. To cook rinse off, pat dry and salt and pepper and whatever spices that you want to use. Spread the breast in vegetable oil or soft butter and bake for the specified time. I use a meat thermometer to make sure the meat is done. I just cooked a Butterball frozen turkey breast last Sunday. It was delicious.

If I'm not mistaken the frozen turkey breast you are referring to at Costco is the boneless one.

Cooking directions are on the bag, this is a little different than a bone in turkey breast.

I believe they are 4-1/2# turkey breasts, I place in a stainless steel roasting pan, run with soft butter, sometimes stick some butter under the skin and sprinkle with McCormick's Seasoning Salt.  Follow baking guidelines, one of the easiest poultry to cook.

I saw them but didnt buy one (yet)

I've used America's Test Kitchen Turkey en Cocotte which starts on the stovetop to sear and then pop in the oven.

Makes the best turkey gravy I've ever had and the breast is very moise.

It's tricky getting their recipes on their site because you have to be a subscriber however it is repeated elsewhere online and they also have a youtube on how to make it.  Really worth the effort!

Re: Frozen Turkey Breast--how to cook

I just bought a frozen turkey breast last week. First time I put it in my air fryer. It came out delicious. Moist and tender with crispy skin .  It was almost 7 pounds.  I defrosted it, rubbed the outside with a little melted butter and just salt and pepper. It was great. It took about an hour. I used a thermometer at the end just to make sure it was cooked since this was my first time making it in the air fryer. So it was 365 degrees for about an hour.

I would put that baby right in the crockpot with some herbs and turkey broth.

Set it on low for 8 hours and it would be delicious.   You could even add some potatoes, onions and carrots if you want.  Of course I would thaw it out first.  Good luck Smiley Happy

Re: Frozen Turkey Breast--how to cook

I appreciate all the input.  I think  I will try putting  the thawed breast into my covered oval LeCreuset dutch oven with some herbs, seasoning  and broth.  Then let it go for at least several hours at a very low oven temperature.

Then maybe let it roast uncovered for a while?  I don't know, will have to see how it goes.
