I've had both. The slick dumping and the puffy. I like them both but prefer the puffy ones!

I don’t like chicken and dumplings and I’ve never made them but I have this recipe that I thought sounded like the dumplings my grandma used to make except she’d use batter she made kinda like what Kachina624 posted for the dumplings

Easy Southern Chicken and dumplings

1 whole chicken or 4 large chicken breasts , skin on
1 stalk celery
1 onion , chopped
1 lg can biscuits
3 tbsp butter
Salt
Pepper

Cover a whole chicken or chicken breasts with water
Add the onion and celery
Simmer until tender
When tender remove chicken From broth , strain the broth and
Discard the onion & celery
put the broth back into large saucepot , add butter
Remove all the bones and skin from chicken ,tear into bite size pieces , set aside
Bring the broth to a boil
Cut each biscuits into fourths , then cut into fourths again
Drop the biscuits pieces into the boiling broth
Stirring carefully occasionally to separate the dumplings as you add them
Add salt and lots of black pepper
Cover , turn heat on low
Cook until dumplings are done about 25-30 mins
Add the chicken back stir carefully, serve

Those flat dumplings are nothing but thick noodles, to me.  I grew up on the ones made with flour and milk or Bisquick.  Light and fluffy!

@Icegoddess

There are some good quick dumpling recipes on the Pillsbury site using their flaky biscuits.

@rockygems123I've seen them, but they sound to me like the big fluffy ones, not the flat ones.  I specifically want the style like the ones you get at Cracker Barrel. That's why I mentioned CB as a reference point.

Am confused by "flat" dumplings---I make chix and dumplings--believe it or not, in my mircowave--have a great recipe------but mine are fluffy, made with the usual stuff but I drop them with  spoon onto the hot chix mixture--- To me, flat dumplings are chewy, thick noodles. Tried the ones sold here, from the people who make the side dishes, a while ago and they were gross!!

@Kachina624 --yes!!! this is what I make too. glad to get a recipe for the pressure cooker---my recipe is from an old microwave cookbook where everything was cooked--chicken and veggies, in it and the dumplings were added and cooked in it as well--always came out delicious!!

Re: Frozen Flat Dumplings

[ Edited ]

I don't make chicken 'n' dumplings very often but when I get a craving I do the lazy way and use a tube of Pillsbury Flaky Biscuits and cut them in quarters for the dumplings, works for me.

This is what Chicken N Dumplings look like when made with the flat type dumplings the OP requested info for.

They are different than the biscuit type many have posted about.

The flat type are made by the Amish and PA Dutch who call them Pot Pie...and also they are considered a southern dish.

I buy a can of "Sweet Sue" Chicken & Dumplings and pick the bits of chicken out with tongs.  Dumplings are great!

Put them into your own pot of chicken and broth.  Yum!

Southern Dumplings!
