@PA Mom-mom : Thanks so much for those tips ~ I start from my own seeds as well. This year my youngest GD (she's 23) really wanted us to have this "memory" garden so the seedlings were a very good lesson to begin. We did not use terracotta exclusively ~ just used what I had ~ but will definitely go that route next time. And, I don't think I've every watered that liberally but that might be a big help along with the bigger pots.
Now I'm curious ~ do you cage or stake your plants and do you use any kind of root starter or plant food. GD has already started working on a fall garden so your experience would come in handy if and when you have the time.

@Spacrazy I've been gardening for over 60 years, and I'm still learning. A few years ago we gave up our regular garden in anticipation of moving. Now I just have pots on the patio. I didn't start out watering that much, but when the plants are over 6 feet tall and the stems are over an inch thick, you know the roots are filling the pot. They are thirsty! The pots are well drained, so I don't worry about root rot. Also, this year I mulched the tops of the pots, and that cut down on soil borne diseases. I fertilize regularly as soon as flowers appear. I used a new kind of tomato stake this year.

This isn't the brand, and I got mine at Lowe's. You can move the triangular supports as the plant grows. The more you prune your suckers, the less weight against the supports.
This winter, try viewing some of the great youtube videos on tomatoes and gardening in general.

@PA Mom-mom: Thank you so much for taking this time for me today ~ you give me hope. Never knew to mulch the tops of the pots but absolutely will do. My GD knew to prune the suckers but in all honesty I held her back from aggressive pruning (my ignorance). Can't wait to make these changes and getting more education. Now all that's left is for you to continue your delicious 'mater' sandwiches 💛🌻💛

I'd do the exact same thing if I had those beautiful homegrown tomatoes! Eat those delicious sammies and enjoy them while you have them!

@PA Mom-mom I can't do bacon anymore, but we are eating lots of egg and tomato sandwiches almost daily since our tomatos have riped. I look forward to this every year.
We are eating lots of sandwiches with tomato - turkey burgers, hamburgers, cheese and tomato, tuna salad with tomato. I like toast well buttered with tomato between two pieces, the salt and butter melts into the tomato, so easy and good. Usually I don't put much butter on toast except for this tomato version.
We went out to eat yesterday and had cut up our tomatos at home and took them along with us to put in our salads. Sure made a good salad.

@KathyM23 I really love salt with my tomatoes. And good for you taking your fresh tomatoes with you to add to your salads!

Am so jealous of your tomatoes!!!!! I've been buying the big heirloom ones from a local farm and DD and I have been using them on toasted cheese and tuna sammies!!! and even plain sliced with a little balsamic vinegar and a drop or 2 of olive oil just .....because !!!![]()
