Favorite Little Sides With Christmas Dinner

What are your favorites?

I still like to serve some my mother always had on the Christmas dinner table.

My favorite is watermelon pickles, then pitted black olives and the little sweet gherkins.

She also had a serving plate with fresh green onions and radishes.

We grew up eating plain foods.  My father liked meat, potatoes and salad.  We didn't have little sides with family holiday meals.  My favorite side is mashed potatoes.  Holiday meals is usually the only time of the year I eat them.

My grandmother always had a relish tray with green onions, radishes and little crab apples (they came in a jar).  Each person had their own little salt dish.  Also, she always served a juice glass of tomato juice as an appetizer.  She was a great cook and I still miss her after all these years, but thankful for the memories.

Re: Favorite Little Sides With Christmas Dinner

It's just my husband, our two young children, and myself at our home on Christmas Day, so we keep it fairly simple.  The kids love to play with their new gifts and my husband and I like to relax.  Don't laugh, but we like to keep it low key.  I don't want to spend my Christmas in the kitchen.  I like to prepare as much as I can in advance.

Christmas Eve, I always make breakfast for dinner.  We have sausage crepes, hash browns, and fruit.

Christmas morning we have sour cream coffee cake while opening presents.  For lunch, we sit down at the dining room table and play Christmas music while we eat.  We get a Honey Baked ham and make sandwiches, I'll make a soup, and we'll have some chips.  I'll have other things to graze on throughout the day.  I make whiskey meatballs, buy crab dip and crackers, seasoned pecans, and fruit platter.  I usually make several types of cookies, and will have a pie or a cake.

Yes!  They do, @panda1234  Smiley Happy

My mother used to make hers from scratch, but I've found where it can be bought.

The Vermont Country Store carries jars of them, and I also find them in a store in San Francisco.

Oh, that takes me back!  I'd forgotten it was called a relish tray, I'm glad you mentioned that.

And the little crab apples, those, too!  My mother used to serve them, also.  They certainly were festive looking.

Thanks for the memories Smiley Happy

Re: Favorite Little Sides With Christmas Dinner

My mother always had sweet mixed pickles, pitted black olives, green olives, and pieces of celery.  In later years, she added marinated artichoke hearts.  We had this as light appetizers while waiting for dinner.  I still make this for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
