@ritasNo1Fan, I saw some photos where the A&P Bar cake had a cream cheese filling and also frosting on top, and other photos with just the cream cheese frosting on top. Since I had never had this before, I just put it on top.

I Do remember that so well.  Great stuff.
The cream cheese frosting was perfect with spicey cake!   Thanks for the memory nudge.

@jannabelle1

Sounds like Spanish Bar Cake made by Jane Parker sold at A&P.

Is this the cake?  Lo and behold HSN is selling it.

Looking for a recipe for the Spanish Bar cake I came across this excerpt:

Spanish Bar Cake was a very simple bar shaped raisin spice cake with an unfussy vanilla frosting. Being a fan of old time recipes, I certainly became quite interested in finding a recipe.

Turns out this cake was made by Jane Parker Bakery and sold through the A&P supermarket chain in the US & Canada. The reader who sent me the request grew up in Ottawa.

If that is accurate the cake HSN is selling should be quite similar.

ETA:  The cake I remember did not have the filling but otherwise the cake in the photo looks like the cake I remember.

Re: Do you remember a spice cake from A&P grocers?

This brings back fond memories of my Dad!  This was absolutely his favorite cake!  I remember when my Mom and Dad had their paydays they would shop at the A & P and Acme stores and then my Dad would have to get his Spanish Bar Cake!  It was in a loaf shape and was not very large.  He would have a slice with his coffee and oh, how he loved this stuff!  He got me hooked on it, too and we would share a slice!  That, and his fig newtons!

Don't know about this cake, but my neigbor gave me a recipe last week which I haven't made yet, but she raved about it.

1 spice cake   15oz can of pumpkin, bake 130* till tooth pick  comes out clean, cool spread with cream cheese iceing.

Re: Do you remember a spice cake from A&P grocers?

Jane Parker has a website that offers the original cake for $35.97 and free shipping. HSN is now offering two cakes for $42.50, but it seems from the reviews the shipping process has been a problem.

I remember this cake well from the local A&P on Long Island where I grew up!

@Foxxeeand @Marp, yes, that's the spice cake I was referring to. The Jane Parker Spanish Bar Cake! Mine didn't turn out as pretty as the ones pictured, but it sure does taste good! I'll have to check it out on HSN, although it really wasn't difficult to make, and probably a lot less expensive since I had all the ingredients on hand. Thanks for your comments!

@Jinlei : Yes - the fruit cake. That was our family's favorite and of course the ground coffee.

Re: Do you remember a spice cake from A&P grocers?

The fruit cakes that A&P sold are still available.  I recently finished one that I ordered several months ago.  Call (833-572-2537/833-JPCAKES) or visit their website:  JaneParkerdotcom if you'd like one.  JaneParkerFruitcake is also on Facebook.
