Now I want to try it. I have never seen chipped beef in a jar. Would it be in the meat section? or with bologna?
Have only had Stouffer's frozen chipped beef in a plastic bag.

Usually the canned meat section. The jarred is saltier than Buddig Beef lunch meat

Creamed dried beef on toast was fast food in the '50s. It was a cheap meal too. Mom used to fix it when she didn't feel like cooking much. I can't say it was a favorite of mine.

What a blast from the past. I haven't seen or eaten that in years. As a kid I liked it for lunch.

My Mom, too. Also Welsh rarebit with Campbell's tomato soup and Velveeta. Five kids, easy dinners back then.

@Ainhisg wrote:Yes, I buy the dried beef in glass jars often at Wal-Mart.
Here in the South, GA, Armour is sold in pretty much every grocery store, Publix, Kroger, Food Lion, etc. as well as WalMart type stores.
There are many good dip recipes using it too, just google them.

I haven't thought about Welsh Rarebit for decades. My mom used to make it with sharp cheddar cheese and beer.

I make a cheese ball and a bread dip from this jarred brand of dried beef. With both recipes, I soak the beef in cold water for 30 minutes, then rinse, and dry on paper towels, to help remove some of the salt.
My mother also soaked and rinsed this meat before using it in recipes. She saved the glasses and we drank orange juice from them in the morning. We used the tiny glasses a lot when my baby brother was small; they were just the right size for tiny hands.
The SOS my dad ate in the Army, and taught mom to make was not made with this type of beef. It was made with hamburger, and all the fat that cooked out of the meat was used to cook and brown the flour before adding milk to complete the gravy. The military specifically used the fat in this dish to help prevent constipation. When my husband was in the Army in the early 70's, the SOS he ate was also made with hamburger.
I really like hamburger gravy, but always use leaner meat, and drain any fat.

My mom used to make creamed chipped beef with a gazillion peas swimming in it and served it over toast. We all hated that nasty stuff. Blech!
