Dessert ideas for a funeral reception.

I have been asked to be the one to bring desserts for a funeral reception. It is only for close friends and family so I would judge the number to be around 25.  Lunch will also be served.

Suggestions? Should I keep it at finger foods such as cookies and small pastries or should I make cakes and pies? Or both?

I would do a plate of extra nice fancyish cookies.  Easy to eat if not at a table.

@Calcgirl - I also vote for desserts easy to handle, like cookies, brownies, and small pastries, as you said. Since it is lunch, I would bet people will be walking around a lot after they eat.

I have helped in situations like this. For lunch, we have always had sandwiches with chips in bags, vegetables and dips, and sometimes salads. Desserts have always been easy to eat finger foods.

Have you been asked to make or just bring?  If it were me I would go to a good bakery in the area and order a couple of beautiful pastry trays with cookies, cannolis, cupcakes, maybe some lemon bars and other assorted finger desserts....unless of course you enjoy baking.

No cakes or pies or anything that needs cut for portions. Agree that individual items are the way to go. I also like the idea of ordering from a bakery for two reasons.

A.) Supporting a local business

B.) Items will be packaged for easy transport and repacking of any leftovers.

I head up the funeral lunches at my church. You van's go wrong with cookies or cake. Some people will want to walk around and visit. Cookies are good for that. Others want to sit and visit. Cake is perfect for that. Either one will be appreciated. Oh, and bar cookies are great too. Thanks for helping out.

I agree with finger foods.  I help with funeral luncheons at my church.  Finger foods....cookies, brownies, lemon bars, etc. go first. Some people don't want a lot to eat but enjoy something small and sweet.  Add a bowl of individually wrapped chocolates too...😋.

As a follow-up to my post....here is a suggestion for brownies that really "kicks it up a notch".  If you can buy Brownie Bites at a store (look like a mini-muffin size)....also get a tube of ready made frosting (come with special tip)....couple squirts on top of brownie....looks nice on tray...taste good too!
