i go through this every Saint Patrick's Day - how to cook my corned beef and which cut.  I have never tried cooking it in a slow cooker.  This year I am having company so it must be good. Some years cooked on the stove has been just ok and the cabbage too soggy. So I thought I would try a different method this year.  Any suggestions to make this year my best.  Do you recommend a flat or point cut?

Re: Corned Beef in slow cooker

I always buy a flat cut.    Cook your meat in the slow cooker til tender......maybe 8 hours.  You can add potatoes and carrots the last hour and a half.   Then ladle some juice from the crock into a large cookpot.....quarter your cabbage........add more water to cover, and boil the cabbage on the stove.

Re: Corned Beef in slow cooker

I've done corned beef in the slow cooker and it turns out great!  I use the flat cut (the one that is more lean and a little bit more expensive).  Use a bunch of extra peppercorns for flavor (family likes it this way) and I put the cabage on top the last hour or so of cooking.  Good luck!

definitely use a flat cut! Point cut is all grizzle/fat

I also do the cabbage separately as it doesn't fit in the crockpot. Just boil for 20-30 mins. until soft.

Re: Corned Beef in slow cooker

I always use the crock pot. I also use Cook's brand. I make 2, one flat and one point. Some family members like the fat.
I will not eat soggy boiled cabbage. I fry half lb. of bacon until crisp. Remove from pan. Add cut up cabbage, pepper and toss for a few minutes. I then lower the heat, put a lid on it and cook for 15-20 minutes depending on firm or soft you like your cabbage. Put in serving bowl and add the bacon. I guarantee you, it's way tastier than boiled cabbage.

@Biftu

I always get the flat cut, also.

I've been making corned beef for years and tried it with a slow cooker last year.  We didn't like it that way, it was tougher than usual.

I got a pressure cooker recently and tried a corned beef in it weeks ago... the best EVER!

I'll be using the pressure cooker again for St. Patrick's Day.

I smoke mine outside these days, but I used to slow cook it in chicken broth and the seasoning in a tea ball.    When it's done I wrapped it in foil and returned to the oven.   Then I strained out the fat and brought the juice to a boil, and tossed the potatoes and cabbage in to cook.

I generally buy flat cut as well.
