Found a thirty page cookbook my mother got from the power company in 1964. Do any of you recall some strange recipes from your youth?

These gems are made with cling peach halves, filled with cream cheese that has been mixed with cranberry relish. In the picture, they look like orange whoopie pies on a bed of lettuce.

Personally, I found anything made with Knox gelatin gross. I probably could eat these if I had to.

Hi!
so, are you going to make them or what?

I’m going to see if I can find a pic of them!

I only found this :

Oh no @LTT1  I have no desire to make them. I mentioned those types of recipes because we eat so differently now compared to sixty years ago. The fudge recipe called for buttered syrup; wonder what that is. The eggnog used eight beaten eggs, along with whipping cream. I'm not sure it's even safe to consume raw eggs.

@AuntG

I remember my mother making something similar...

Pear halves (from the can) dollop of cream cheese sprinkled with pecans.

@AuntG

I was thinking the same while trying to find your recipe

How differently we eat noe

For instance, the picture of the "Christmas salad" I posted

Jere is what I thought:

It looks like just a bunch of twigs and leaves type junk one would pick up in the woods

Thrown onto a platter

Toss in cherry tomatoes and mozzarella cheese balls

VOILA ‼️‼️‼️ CHRISTMAS!

Who even DOES this?

Who even opens cans of things (ie: canned cling peaches or pears) to serve for dinner...?

Nect thing you know...I’m going to throw a bunch of celery on a platter ‼️ VOILA‼️Easter!

Thankfully my mother never cooked or made anything from a written recipe.  I never grew up eating weird food. She cooked for a living.

She only followed written recipes for baked goods.  She never baked much, except for pies.  My sisters and I were the bakers.

I recall something called Sunshine Salad. It was a nasty lemon or orange jello with grated carrots, pineapple, and I think celery. It was quite popular at church functions, and I avoided it like the plague. 😝

Hi, @LTT1 !  Looks to me like the Christmas Salad has a bed of baby arugula and is drizzled with balsamic glaze.  This is one way I've made a caprese style salad using arugula lightly dressed with olive oil, salt and pepper.  HTH

I'm not familiar with exactly what you mentioned, but it reminded me of what my grandmother called "pear salad." When I was growing up in the 70s, she would have it quite often when we went over there. It was pear halves with mayo on top and a bit of shredded cheese and sometimes a cherry. I actually liked it. I would probably eat it now, but haven't thought about it in years! Smiley LOL

@LTT1  The pear halves with cream cheese and pecans sounds good.  When my girls were little, I would give them a pear half

filled with cottage cheese and cut up maraschino cherries.
