Here is a recipe passed onto to me that was from the kitchen of my favorite Aunt. Besides my Mother, she was one of the best Southern cooks I've ever had the pleasure of sharing a meal with. She was always laughing and a very light hearted person, who made her company doubly pleasurable.

I hope y'all have many happy memories this holiday season. I have many, along with a few bittersweet ones, as I'm sure we all do. However, I have many many blessings. Too many to count, as a matter of fact.

CHOCOLATE CAKE

(First do this)

1 stick oleo (or 1 stick of unsalted butter)

1/2 cup of Crisco

1 cup water

4 tablespoons of cocoa (heaping)

Put in pan and bring to a boil point (Do Not Boil)

take off stove

Let Cool

Mix 2 cups of sugar and 2 large eggs together - beat well

add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup of buttermilk in mixer

Sift 2 cups of all purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

and pinch of salt together

add to sugar and egg mixture

add the cooled chocolate mixture and mix well

Pour in greased and floured pan or pans

bake at 350 deg about 35 minutes or until done

ICING

1 stick of oleo or unsalted butter

4 tablespoons cocoa

6 tablespoons whole milk

put in pan, bring to boil point, stir all the time

take off stove

add one box of powdered sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla

1/2 cup cut up walnuts

3/4 cup coconut (angel flaked)

pour over cake
