A good book for cakes, bars, frostings and the like is ROSIE'S bakery Baking Book.
Everything I've made has gotten raves from others. The Snow Queen cake with raspberry filling is Very pretty.

I just saw your request. Although I've made many "scratch" cakes but lately I'm loving the Duncan Hines French Vanilla OR White cake mixes. It tastes homemade to me!
I like 8" round therefore, since cake mixes are about 4 c. I will make 2 boxes. I make a few cupcakes with the extra batter. To the batter I add some colored sprinkles to make it festive.
I don't bake full time as noted in directions only about 23 min or until tester comes out clean so it's moist. Once cooled, cut layers in 1/2 getting 4 "thin" layers.
This week I am home for long weekend 💃💃we are celebrating gd 10th bday & my son (40🙄🤦🏼♀️) & Mother's day. I will be making the cake -- something simple.
I am making a white layer cake w/marshmallow fluff icing (pure white). You won't taste the butter at all...just make sure it's not to "stiff" (I've used this recipe for years from Betty Crocker)
I will make large rosettes for the frosting (large pretty swirls using large star tip) and finish with a "sprinkling of sprinkles"
Happy Birthday to your daughter 🎂🧁
Wow, so perfect! ❤️

Years ago there was a book out, "The Cake Mix Doctor" , which has delicious recipes for all occasions using boxed mix as a basic. The frostings were great as well, and there were many of them. She also wrote "The Chocolate Cake Mix Doctor". Anne Bryn was her name. Has all sorts of bars, coffee cakes, ice cream cakes. Prob some inexpensive copies available on Amazon, or maybe even online somewhere. Anyone else remember this?

@dodies Yes, I remember that book. There are several versions available on the big A.

I wanted to tell you that I made this cake yesterday!
It was a huge hit with our eight-year-old granddaughter
we hadn't seen in a year and a half. The Maraschino cherries,
the pecans, and the pink color and flavor from the cherry
juice really made the cake special. It was delicious.
And, like your father, my husband really liked it.
I really appreciate that you posted this recipe. It will be
a favorite. Thank you.

@Susan in California I'm thrilled that you enjoyed it. It looks so special but is so simple. Thanks for letting me know.

I just got a call from a relative from Washington state
who told me he was making "that cake" for his
wife who was unable to visit us last weekend.
He listed all the ingredients over the phone, and I said,
"yes, you've got it all!"
I was so happy that everyone loved that cake so much,
and just imagine, your sharing it brought it here to CA
as well as WA.
To be honest, I would love a slice right now!

@Susan in California So happy to hear I helped make you a heroine.
Hint, hint.... It's very good made with a chocolate cake mix too.

HA! I'm glad you mentioned the chocolate version.
While we were eating the cake, one of our daughter-in-laws said she thought it would be great as a chocolate
version as well!
