Bavarian Pot Roast

 

1  (5 pound) chuck roast
1 Tablespoon cinnamon
1 Tablespoon vinegar
2 tsp ginger
1  1/2 tsp salt

1 cup water
1  1/2 cups apple juice
1 (8 oz)  can tomato sauce
1/2 of a medium onion...chopped
1 bay leaf
1/4 cup flour

1/2 cup water
1/4 cup sliced mushrooms

 

Brown roast on all sides in oil in dutch oven. Combine cinnamon, vinegar, ginger and salt. Add one cup water, apple juice, tomato sauce, onion and bay leaf. Place roast in dutch oven. Pour over tomato sauce mixture. Simmer, covered, for 3 hours or until tender. Remove bay leaf. Combine flour and 1/2 cup water to make paste. Add to tomato mixture gradually, stirring constantly until thickened. Add mushrooms to gravy. Serve the gravy over roast slices.

Hi Lilbit,

 

So glad to see you are posting your recipes on a regular basis.  Hoping you don't leave anytime soon!  I rarely eat beef but this recipe looks scrumptious enough that I intend to make it.  Thanks for sharing it.  Stay well.

I made your recipe tonight with just a  slight difference - I used a less expensive round roast and instead of cooking it on the stove I browned it on the stove then put it in my crockpot for 5 hours on high setting. It was fabulous, the round roast was very tender after cooking so long and I made some spatzel to go with it and some sweet/sour red cabbage. It was a huge hit with DH.
