Looking to extend butter and make it softer to spread. I have bought store versions that taste yucky. Want to make a good tasting home made version.

I've made homemade butter and it is delicious! However, today, it is difficult to find milk that has just been pasturized. You need milk that has not been homogenized to make good butter.
It is easy to make, let the milk set out and 'sour' in a glass jar. When it sours, clabbers, you just shake, shake, shake!
When butter forms, it will rise to the top. Remove, drain out all the liquid and mold or use as is!
