Am I eating "bad" Meat?

[ Edited ]

I've been buying a lot of hamburger meat.

I open the packages, shape them into patties, wrap them and then store in the freezer.

I've noticed some of them seem to have a weird taste.  Not all - but some.

Am i eating bad meat?

Are you supposed cook hamburger meat once the package has been opened?

@RinaRina I don't know, honestly. I'm 72 and for at least 40 years I've bought hamburger in bulk or packs, made patties and froze them. We thawed as needed and cooked. No problems ever.

Are you buying meat that is  possibly not as fresh as it should be? Are you thawing it in the fridge and not on the kitchen counter (a huge no no IMO for health reasons)?

Maybe someone else will have some ideas. But if a batch of meat tastes "off" I would throw it out.

I don't know, I have bought hamburger meat before that just didn't smell right, I threw it out, because I thought if it smells gross, God knows what it will taste like.

I started buying in bulk from a butcher in town. Its not much more expensive and I have never had any of it smell off like it did from the supermarket sometimes.

IF the meat wasn't fresh, you'd notice an odor as soon as you opened the package, in which case you should return to the store.

How long has it been frozen.? Perhaps freezer burn.

@RinaRina I don't buy a lot of meat, but I have heard one should never buy ground meat because you will get the worst.  Pick the meat that you like and have the butcher grind it for you.  That is what we used to do.

What are wrapping the patties in?  I use foil, tighly so no air can get in.

How long have the patties been in the freezer?  Shelf life is 6-8months.
