My dietitian offered this somewhat lighter version that I find tasty:

2 tbsp butter

1 tbsp minced garlic

4 oz cream cheese cut into chunks

1 cup milk

1 1/2 cups grated Parmesan

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 tsp pepper

Melt butter in saucepan.  Stir in garlic for a couple minutes.

Add cream cheese to melt for a few minutes, then whisk until smooth and creamy.

Slowly whisk in milk 1/4 cup at a time.  Stir in Parmesan, salt, and pepper until melted.

Cook for 2-3 minutes to thicken.
