I made these for a women's Christmas event last night with a few modifications. Everyone loved them. They're so easy!

Alabama Firecrackers (from Southern Living)

16 oz. bag Saltine crackers

1 tsp. garlic powder

1 tsp. onion powder

1/2 tsp. black pepper

4 Tablespoons (about 2 pkgs.) Ranch dressing mix

3 Tbsp. red pepper flakes

2 cups olive oil

Pour olive oil and spices into gallon-size zip lock bag. Reseal the bag and knead until the oil and spices are well mixed.

Add the crackers and gently turn over several times until the crackers have absorbed the oil and spices.

Let the bag sit overnight.

Remove the crackers from the bag and spread them out on a baking sheet. Bake at 250 degrees for about 15 minutes. Let cool and serve.

Here are my changes:

I used two sleeves of the crackers and it was enough for 15 people (with other snacks people brought).

Three Tbsp. of red pepper flakes would make these really hot! I used 1 Tbsp. for just a little heat, and no one thought it was too spicy.

I used 1 cup canola oil.

I forgot to buy the ranch dressing mix, so I used Italian seasoning and it was fine.

I let the marinated crackers sit for about an hour, then turned the bag over. I repeated this twice, then let them sit overnight.

I did not bake them. They marinated all day. I put them on a plate and took them up.

I'll have to admit - they WERE addicting!   Smiley Wink

@beach-mom  Sounds delicious, I have never had them but I think they would be good with some soup especially tomato soup.

Since you didn't bake them, how did you keep them from being oily and wet?

@Puppy Galore - They were fine. I cut back on the oil.

@beach-mom

Thank you, I read the recioe again and you used 1 cup instead of 2.

Thank you, I'll try these next week.

It's really hard to imagine what these crackers look and taste like.  I can't imagine they wouldn't be soggy.   @beach-mom.  I'll have to take your word for them being aductive.

Sounds good but personally I would leave out the red pepper flakes.

If she baked them they would not be soggy.

this sounds like the oyster crackers we make this time of the year. no red pepper though (we use dill), but a great snack for guests. they are baked for a short period though. you can also try the mini saltines!
