Watching a Meme's Kitchen video today she did a 7 Layer Salad. I have only had this once, and liked it.
How old do you think this dish is?

i always think of it as a southern US dish. I remember my aunt making it when I was a child, so it has been around at least since the 1950's.

My SIL was obsessed with making this salad for every family function after she married in 1975. I don't eat it.
My mother, grandmother, or aunt never made this; it would not have been touched by the men in our family.

Don't know how old it is, but it's been around a long time. There are so many people who make this, 7 Layer Salad, that I figure I've had more than 70 layers by now.
I still like it, but it's wearing out its welcome. I no longer say -- 'Oh great, a 7 Layer Salad, my favorite.'

Everyone in my family likes it, but I only make it for Christmas. I don't know how/why it became a "special" Christmas thing. I've seen recipes over the years, and everyone's layers are different. Wherever I originally got the recipe from just called it No Toss Salad and it has more than seven layers.

I myself have been making it for fifty years and I am sure it is older than that. Delicious dish and easy to make with a lot of variations. It seems to always be a crowd pleaser.

Is this the one with peas in it?
People seem to take things out and add what they like at will.
My background is different. On the farm was different than with my step mother who did pot roasts and potato salad with deviled eggs, fruit on a lettuce leaf. I had never had that.
I had been used to potatoes with gravy and fried or roasted meat. We had a lot of foods from the big garden.
Many homemade pound cakes and fruit pies.

That salad is as old as the hills. As old as jello salads.
Now days with what is available at grocery stores there are so many better salads--both for taste and nutrition. And today's variety of rice or grain based salads are a pleasant change too.
What we have access to fresh is so much better than the dusty little package of tabbouleh salad mix we used to buy and like! ![]()

It's old. I remember making this a couple of times 30 years ago and it was old then.
