What is our connection with hosts?

[ Edited ]

I have been a viewer and shopper of QVC since 1986. Many comments have been made here on this forum with statements like "they are just hosts", "not your friends", "they're only sales people".

Yes, they are sales people and hosts and not "my friend". But I gotta say............

I never record any shows on QVC, no need, you can easily access items recently aired. However, I wanted to watch My Time With MaryBeth.

Yep, I cried twice. Not because MaryBeth is my friend but because hearing her talk and seeing her from the 80's and 90's just bring back so many memories. She is the first host I saw presenting. I was at my parents and she was selling a diamonique ring. My 1st child was 2 years old and is now 40. I asked my mom, "What are you watching! A SHOPPING channel?" Anyway, I got hooked and the memories that come rushing to my mind are of being pregnant, having my babies, going through their young lives at that time. When they woke in the middle of the night, QVC was always on the TV. Easy to relax while nursing my infants. I would have it on all day as background noise. I never worried about the kids watching, no violence or situations you didn't want them to see.

So, for all those naysayers that MaryBeth is just a host, seeing her on the Q means so much more to me than just a shopping channel host. Seeing her brings back special moments with my children, exciting new things I couldn't find elsewhere (no Amazon, no online shopping), hearing her share her stories about her own children and adoption.

Lastly, I believe the comments by her peers are truly genuine. I think she is the mother of QVC, well respected, and Minnesota nice as Rick stated. She will be missed by so many viewers.

@cjm61  Wasn't it your son that wrote a class assignment that he hated QVC 😝 ? I remember you  or another poster posting that some time back. It made me laugh so hard that I shared the laugh with my family. 😂

I will miss MBR as well, even if she's not my friend. Lol

@ellaphant I am in total agreement with you they are not my friends.

If I remember correctly, MBR started her online shopping career at CVN, which was the first incarnation of what ended up as the rather sad ShopHq.  It was, and still is, based in Minnesota and so was she originally.  She was one of the hosts who transferred over to QVC when they acquired CVN in the late 80's.  I have been watching as long as you have, suffice to say!

I didn't read your entire comment on "what is our connection with hosts?" Here's my 2 cents. If the hosts aren't your friends than neither are the people who comment on this forum.

No---have no connection with anyone I watch on TV---and being so emotional because they are retiring from QVC---has no bearing on my life--they are doing a job and they age just like everyone else and go on to other things just like anybody else. They are not part of my family--I can't depend on them to help me out when needed. I don't get all this regret that they are moving on. They help pass the time and there will always be someone there to do the same thing.

@Bookplate Not sure what you mean my she is based in Minnesota, I thought all the hosts lived with a short distance of the studio in PA

@cjm61

Nice post and happy to read.  I feel the exact same way.  Mary Beth was and always will be my favorite QVC host.

I find it sad that on an almost daily basis a handful of posters (one posting on this thread) need to put hosts down with comments such as "mere sales people", "only sales people", "just sales people."

Sales is a noble and honorable profession as much as any,  and the repeated comments are insulting to those in sales.

But I guess those posters worked in much, much more lofty and prestigious professions according to their arrogant bias.
