When my MIL started using facebook, she was using LOL frequently to respond to posts.  Posts such as someone being ill or suffering a loss.  My spouse told her she needed to stop, it wasn't appropriate.  She said well, I'm just sending them 'Lots of Love'

I think kindness and respect for each other is very important here on this board.  I don't care if LOL is outdated or used too often.  I don't think it should be criticized.

per a quick google search hehe is a more updated substitute for lol.  @AuntG  don't fret.  I think haha is good too.  just lose the parentheses!  I think those are dated (haha, hehe)

@Grace6663582  I also found the newer substitute for lol - used by the more with it people.

Another thing, sometimes LOL is used so that other posters know you are kidding or your response is tongue in cheek. It is easy to misinterpret and perhaps take offense where none is intended.
