Someone mentioned you can get free shipping with some vendors when you buy a certain amount. While that is true, it is one of those marketing tools to get you to spend more than you normally would. Don't get caught in that trap by going back to pick something else (that you didn't initally want or need) to add to your order to get the "free' shipping. Basically what you have done is cheat yourself out of money because it almost always works in the vendors favor. I don't know about you but, as an example, I don't want to pay $30 for an extra item to get the "free shipping for $100 purchase" to save $10 in S&H. Frankly "Free" is almost never truly free.

I shop around and when I see something here, I go straight to Amazon to see if it is there, and if it is a better deal, I buy the item there because I love free shipping.

With so many online companies to choose from that offer free or reasonable shipping, QVC seems to be going backwards. I recently sent a letter to CS about the shipping to Alaska. Q used to charge the same amount to ship to AK as to any other state (regular shipping, nothing special). After the holidays, the price doubled and tripled. A $19 Lock and Lock order was going to cost $15 to ship! I realize that shipping to AK can be more, but for all the many years I have shopped Q, it was the same as to other states.
CS said they would forward my email. I don't expect another response, but I have started looking more at HSN. The shipping seems to be faster and the ship rates are more reasonable. I have also found items advertised on Q that were available on Amazon for a lower price and free shipping. Zappos is great for shoes (free shipping and free returns). LL Bean has free shipping.
Competition is good!

Amazon certainly offers ease of shopping and shipping for items they fulfill is pretty quick. They also offer options and you can shop for the best price from among those vendors for which they process orders. That said, I don't always think they offer the best prices and shippinng for 3rd party vendors can be downright at a snail's pace. The free shipping is often an advantage, but it doesn't always apply. I do like the volume of items they offer and shop there often.

But see ultimately that's where we have to use our smarts. If QVC is selling a bag for three hundred dollars and another retailer is selling the same bag for three hundred dollars and free shipping over a hundred dollars spent, then it absolutely makes sense to go for the free shipping. To purchase things that will not be of use simply to meet a threshold for free shipping isn't all that smart. That said, adding something to an order to meet the free shipping threshold that I'd be likely to buy at some point anyway can be a good choice. I'd also note that not all retailers set their threshold for free shipping high. Any way you slice it, shipping costs are not one of the advantages to shopping here.

You are absolutely right that it makes sense if you are adding items to your shopping list that you intend to purchase anyway and are getting the best prise. However, stores know, from experience, that most people will just end up buying more than they originally planned to "save" money.
