Objects have gender in Romance languages. "Le sac" is masculine, but "la bourse" is female. Both mean "bag" in French.

It's very common for people to personify things they really like a lot.  This is nothing new and has been going for for all of my 60+ years. So I know it's gone on way before that.

 

Men have called their boats and cars "she" forever.  

 

She's a beauty (car)

 

I got her at an auction (motorcycle)

 

I named her Betty Lou (boat)

 

etc.

It's a fairly common practice, to apply gender, even names to items in our lives. Like many others,  I know, my vehicle has a name and it is a HE.

 

Envisioning something as a he, or she, can indicate femininity, or even warrior strength. Different meanings for many, I'm sure. It's just a little fun.

@Caaareful Shopper I didn't see your post before I posted. Sorry about that, but I'm glad to see you support that this is very common. It starts out as kids and we never outgrow it.
