Re: Tell Me About the “Old” QVC

[ Edited ]

My Mom watched QVC from the beginning and got me hooked about a year or so later.

Trip down my memory lane:

So many things I loved, like the 50/50 tour. I still have the 2 original Quacker factory shirts that Jeanne Bice sold (her line was originally mens white button down dress shirts that had applique and/or embroidery.) And yes, I have the Pooping Moose and the Pig hand puppet.

I was hooked on the collectable shows. Teddy Bears - Boyd's (with crazy Gary Lowenthal), Hermann, Deans, Steiff. Dolls - Bette Ball, Marie Osmond, Candy Spelling. Tiffany Lamps. Capodimonte. Forma Vitrum and Department 56. Precious Moments. Lladro, Royal Doulton and Belleek. Collections of clothing from Warner Brothers and M&Ms. NASCAR model cars and driver collections.  Others I've probably forgot.

Then the Joy Mangano stuff. Her original mop. The rolly storage kit, then the rolly jewelry cases. The bow master. The two tier glass vase with multiple ports that when you filled with flowers it looked like a professional arrangement. Phyllis George made-in-USA items. I still have Molly Dallas items and an entire set (that I love) of the handmade Neher/Clay in Motion Apple themed bakeware and accessories.

Jewelry. Beverly Hills Gold (the rep, Claudia definitely had a thing for Jeff Hewson), Imperial Gold (when it was made in USA, before moving to Mexico), Eterna Gold, when Ted Leach (Leach and Garner Gold) was on. The 18k gold shows hosted by Jeff Hewson, then by Pat James Dementri. Kathy Levine, the queen of Diamonique. Silver Style shows hosted by Jane Tracey and by Jill Bauer. "Pink Ice" jewelry. (Pink diamonique, before colored stimulants were popular). Loni  Anderson jewelry - Burt Reynolds would call in during her shows. All day jewelry events with variety and real value. Gold rush shows featuring14k. Removable 14k (spring ring) charms so you design your own charm bracelet.

Someone mentioned Bob Bowersox  and his cooking shows where he actually cooked and shared recipes. T-Fal was the popular cookware line. Nesco  Roasters in 4,6, 12 and 16 quart sizes sold.

Northern Nights was the go to for bedding. Sheets, blankets and multiple iterations of down comforters. Duvet covers.

Various beauty lines over the years that had several TSVs each year like Susan Lucci, Hydron, Ojon, BareMinerals, Diane Young, Nick Chavez. Even Andrew Lessman got his start on QVC.

So many other brands/lines others have mentioned in this thread. 😁

Just want to add that I did purchase many of the items I mentioned, but MOST of my purchases were made at the QVC outlet stores in Frazer Pa, and the (closed) stores in Drexel Hill and Lancaster PA and Prices Corner, Delaware. I paid significantly less than on air prices for the things I bought. And, 😁 , several times I saw some of the hosts shopping there too.

I remember also that they actually gave gram weights when presenting the gold jewelry as well as many of the other things, designers, hosts and product lines that others have mentioned.

I too was with them back then. Lisa dressed in a gown in Italy. Dressed in wild west for Big Bonanza Silver. Marie Osmond and her dolls, They had a variety, not just fashion everyday. A little bit of everything and great hosts that described the item. It has changed, and not for the better.

Re: Tell Me About the “Old” QVC

I remember attending the 50 in 50 tour when it was in Scottsdale. Dan, who retired some years ago, was the host & I forget who his co-host was. There was another event at the venue, then called Rawhide, going on at the same time called "Festival of the West" & we wandered between the two. It was too hot to sit in the direct sun of the QVC audience for long.

Re: Tell Me About the “Old” QVC

I only started watching sometime after 9/11.  I know that I signed up for the message board in 2005.  Before that I thought watching a TV shopping channel was ridiculous.

My friend got me hooked when she told me how great the items were and how much her mom & sister watched & bought.  I even went to visit the Q with her on one of their tours.  I eventually went three times to visit QVC (I'm only an hour away) and one time saw a Bob Macke show.

One good change that I have noticed is that callers tend to be only for the TSVs now. We just don't hear them as much anymore and thank goodness for that!

I do miss some of the early jewelry & cosmetics shows.  I liked Lisa Robertson but was not a fan of Jean Bice though everyone seemed to love her.  She was not my cup of tea.

Around 15 years ago Judith Ripka was very big here and though her items were never cheap they were much more affordable until prices went through the roof!

I remember the message board being much more active and free rolling.  There were some epic fights and the board went through some major overhauls.

What I do miss (before Facebook) is that there was a crafting board and the posters on that board really were great!  We even had a card exchange going....it was a wonderful board until they changed the boards here & most of those posters went off to another board created by one of the members (Crafting with Friends) & then eventually FB.

I remember Pat James D. and her 18 K. gold shows. She wore beautiful gowns and the shows were a delight.

Re: Tell Me About the “Old” QVC

The old Q....

First, hosts behaved like adults. No childish antics. Very few personal stories.

Hosts and vendors let each other talk. Hosts didn't run all over vendors.

Hosts gave all the information about products.

There was a wide variety of products and vendors. Now, there are few vendors and 12-20 products (or variations of) aired over and over and over month after month.

The jewelry inventory was excellent. Now it's mostly costume jewelry. Yes, I know prices are high but their inventory is awful.

Shipping and returns were done in a reasonable time....much faster than now.

The list goes on.
