How important are customer reviews when considering a purchase?
I find reviews to be very helpful most of the time, but than there are reviews for the same item that are so polar opposite, its frustrating, how does one person rate a sweater 5 stars and another rate it 1 star.
Than there are times when all the reviews are stellar-except for that ONE REVIEW!
I accept that people have different opinions, but would appreciate comments be a bit more specific as to why they love or dislike a purchase.I try to do that in my own reviews.
Whats your thoughts on reviews?

I find reading reviews to be more confusing than helpful. I realize people have different tastes and different opinions regarding the materials, so as far as that goes, I know my own tastes and as long as the review provides enough detail when they trash the materials or praise them, I can figure how I will like it. What I can't figure is how can the same product run large, run small, be too baggy but also too clingy etc etc.
I have read reviews after I have bought an item and have decided in many cases, the person didn't really buy the product as their description is so far off in the details.

It depends. If they are all over the board, I look for themes. Like did all the reviewers who gave it one star say it shrank. If there's no theme, I go by the measurements and fabric content.

I always read reviews. I find them especially helpful with sizing on clothes and comfort and sizing of shoes. There are always going to be negative people around but if you take the time to read all the reviews of something you are interested in I think you will find that there is a lot of good information in many of them.
Also, some people give high star counts but may have one negative comment and I appreciate the fact that they are giving the entire " picture ."

I read the reviews (if any) before I buy and also usually find them helpful. But there are a few where I am just plain confused because the reviews are all over the place.

I pay attention to reviews when there seems to be agreement on sizing issues, or when most
agree that a product does not live up to its billing. I especially like Amazon reviews, most are
very specific. Reviews do influence my decision.

I always read them, but take them with a grain of salt. What is really helpful is when many of the reviews say one thing, such as shoes that run very narrow, or a shirt that pills terribly. I will say, if I go to buy something and I'm on the fence and 200 people have reviewed it and it has a poor rating, that will disuade me. Now if 2 people have reviewed it and given it a poor rating, that is not enough, but if many people who have had the product in their own hands do not like it, I give that a little weight.

I give more credit to reviewers who are diplomatic. For example, if it read, "Although I have many IM sweaters, this one has been the sole disappointment. The fabric was extremely itchy." I want to believe that writer over one who rants, "This was yet agin one more ithcy IM sweater im DONE with this line!" I'm still optomistic that if TPTB are reading any of these, they'll pay more attention to constructive, reasonable - and yes, dare I say it - properly written criticism.

I pretty much know what I like when I see it, so what I'm interested in is sizing. It is helpful if people describe their height, weight and inseam. I will go up or down one size if the majority of reviewers state the fit.

I read reviews and look for specifics on why a rating is given. I pay attention if a lot of reviews are negative to look for trends. The same for a lot of positive reviews. I ignore reviews that complain about a reduced price after they paid more for the item earlier or give a low rating because the item is just what it was described to be (like giving a one star rating because a bootie has the zipper on the outside of the shoe when the description clearly states the bootie zipper is on the outside of the shoe). I don't give a lot of weight to ranting, but pay attention to specific issues and features. If I really want an item, I do not always wait for reviews.
