Could be.

Mr. Rawlinson reports to the Board of Directors.

The Board of Directors reports to the Shareholders, Qurate owners.

Shareholders are speaking.

Re: Qurate: New CFO

I am not familiar with finance or business at all. DH and I never worked in those fields. So many posters here are, so I have some questions.

Do you think it would have been better had QVC not merged with HSN and bought the other companies?

Why is QVC largely dismissing the customer base who supported them all along, mostly baby boomers?

Would things be better if QVC sold some of their newer companies? Could they actually do this?

TIA for answering my questions!   Smiley Happy

@beach-mom

Thats a good point, when QVC/HSN merged into QURATE it was at a time when Amazon was rising and it was thought the QVC/HSN combo could challenge Amazon....boy were they wrong.

But a worse move was the acquisition by the parent company (libertyinteractive) of Zulilly, called the Cornerstone Division.  Zulilly was purchased thinking it could grab the younger demographic since they sold children's clothing and items and they thought it would pull in family purchases .......which would filter across the board into QURATE, but its been a thorn in their side with dismal results....Why they dont get rid of this albatross who knows....but who would want it 🤷‍♀️

  • Zulily revenue decreased 28% in Q4 and 38% in full year

Hiring a CFO with experience in bringing a bankrupt retail giant out of bankruptcy while keeping stockholders and executives happy, would appear to be a good move. We see the retrospective financials and can assess the problems. The executives can see what we can’t- the reasonable expectations of the future financials. I’ll bet that the new CFO negotiated a pretty package for himself.

I wonder how many of the laid off employees' salaries it took to equal the package for the new CFO.

Some Customer Count clarification:

Yes, these are exclusively customers who place orders, tracked by new and existing.

These are not viewership, as QVC and HSN are not Nielsened.  Any viewership analysis is subjective and conjecture.   They will throw out the number with access to programming (primarily cable in the home), but these obviously are not all buyers.  The new 10-K puts this number at 93 million.  Additionally their signal goes OTA so they don't know who is watching that way at any moment.

During the pandemic the total customer count rose (see the chart), as new customers for the first time purchased food and home goods primarily.

Problem is, most did not "stick" following the lockdowns.  Attracting and keeping new customers is a problem.

New Customers Only:

2019: 2.8 million

2020: 3.5 million

2021: 2.6 million

2022: 1.9 million

Hope this clarifies some things!

That is bad.  People have so many more otions for online shopping and their prices are not good.

The drop off from 2020 to 2021 after the worst of the lockdown is understandable.

But the trend continuing through 2022 is very problematic.

I'm not all that surprised. Retailers are in trouble and layoffs are one of the first things companies do. I haven't posted on here in nearly a year so I decided to take a look at the clothing offerings on the QVC app and what ghastly overpriced clothes for the most part. Sorry, but when I visit the U.S. now, I can find better stuff in places like T.J.Maxx, Marshall's, or the Skecher outlet store or better clothes in Canada at local malls.

But even Nordstrom Canada is bailing out of the country as they have never turned a profit here. 2500 people will lose their jobs by the end of June if not sooner.

I disagree with this one section you wrote:

are expected to ship "free" (which only means you don't SHOW shipping cost because there is no FREE shipping--it's ALL COST, you pay what you pay no matter what).  Etc. etc.

I have gotten totally free shipping MANY, MANY times here.

If the price of the item in my WL did NOT go up....and I order on free shipping day...I GOT free shipping.

I just ordered a set of Orgreenic pans on free shipping day.

Even with $10+ shipping, QVC was the exact same price as AMZ & Wally.

The price did NOT go up, free shipping day...I saved $10!  Yay Me!!

I agree though, that the food 'free shipping' is already built into the price.  No way the vendor or QVC are eating the cost of those styro containers, dry ice and UPS 2nd day Air!!!

@RespectLife But you paid what you paid--no matter free or $20 shipping.  It's what came out of your pocket whether they have a sale, a percent off, a coupon, or whatever--it's what comes out of your pocket that matters not how it gets to that price.

If you had gotten a $20 off coupon, you'd have been better off than "free" shipping.  But you didn't.  That's the point.

@Sooner

My only point was...my shipping was absolutely, 100% free...you said there is no free shipping and I disagree.  In this purchase, 0.  Nothing built in.

I agree the shipping is built in to the cost of food items...but that is food or items that are always 'free shipping' such as P Nash handbags etc.

However, it an item remains exactly the same price....and the shipping is removed...

It IS free!

@RespectLife  My point is nothing about it is "free."  It is a tactic to offer you a small discount on the item and you are excited because shipping is "free".  Maybe shipping on a $70 item is "free."  OK.  But a 10 percent discount might result in a lower cost.

So shipping is a very small discount often.  You have to look at "free" shipping as only a discount--changes the perspective and value of "free shipping" greatly.

Just think of "free" shipping as a $5 discount, or whatever.  Would you buy the item for that dollar value discount?  It is a sales tactic.
