Re: QVC laying off 2,000 employees

if you google you come up with this:The state of NJ is one of the few states that requires employees to pay unemployment tax. Therefore if you work in NJ both you and your employer pay for your unemployment compensation.

@proudlyfromNJ  Don't bother arguing..soon you'll be relentlessly attacked. It's not worth it. Glad to see someone who understands how payroll deductions are allocated. If a person collects a paycheck (not government subsidized) should know that Unemployment Insurance is deducted. The majority of which goes to those collecting Federal and State funding.

@HonestLife    All you have to do is ask Google for the answer and the replies from multiple sources are consistent.  Employers pay the tax, not employees.  It's a Federal tax collected by the states.

@Kachina624  I had Chicken and wild rice soup with 1/2 turkey & swiss sandwich for lunch today. It was delicious!

@HonestLife, FUTA is not payroll deducted in any state. Employees contribute to SUTA in 3 state, Alaska, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

I'd say QVC has been more than generous in this incident.  Nobody has mentioned the huge charge back to their Federal Unemployment Tax Account for the claims that will be filed, which will cost the company big bucks.

@Kachina624 what Federal Unemployment Tax?  States run unemployment, I thought.  What does the Federal Government have to do with it?

@gertrudecloset    The tax that supports unemployment insurance is a federally authorized tax called the FUTA tax (Federal Unemployment Tax Act).  It is collected and administered by the state employment agencies under the supervision of the US Department of Labor.

OK, so the payments are sent to the IRS though, right? @Kachina624

@gertrudecloset    No, the IRS is not involved.  Each state employment service district has a tax office usually with a sizable staff.  They make sure the tax is paid in accordance with the law and the state collects the payments.  Unemployment insurance is paid from the fund and it also partially supports employment programs.  The FUTA law has been in effect since 1939.
