QVC ASKING FOR CREDIT CARD SECURITY CODE OVER THE PHONE!

I normally shop online, but was without service this week until this afternoon.  On Wednesday, I called to place an order and was asked for my security code.  I told her I never give that out over the phone, don't even give out my credit card number over the phone.  I give it online, but not to a person on the phone.  One the code is given over the phone, it is no longer a security code.  

 

Even my bank wouldn't give me the code when I misplaced my card. I was sent a replacement card.  A sale was lost that day!

It was probably the first order you'd placed since you got that credit card.  I don't know what the big deal is...every clerk in every store where you use it sees your security code.  I just got a new cc and also had to give it the first time I used it.

About once a year, an order won't go through and it's because of the security code. The first time it happened, I figured it out when I went to "my account" page and reapplied the code. This was a credit card already listed.  Another time, I forgot what I did, called CS and they just needed to update the code.

 

If it's not because of updating, then remember you called them, so I would say it's probably ok, since I don't think CS can't see the entire cc number just like what you see on your account page.  I never give out info if someone calls me.  I've been calling different insurances lately for claims and such and they ask for Ss numbers with other info to identify me exactly and it does bother me. But I have to remember I initiated the call.

I've had people ask for my security code, many times, if, I'm placing an order by phone. 

 

It's a way to verify that you have the card in hand, and someone hasn't just copied your card number.

Seriously??  YOu must not order anything over the phone then because every single place I order from by phone using a VISA or any other major credit card asks for that security code.  EVery single one!

Recent purchases by phone were at Bed, BTh & Beyond, The Disney Store, Lands End and Nordstrom.  GOod luck trying to place a phone order without that code being provided.

The reason is to prove you are actually in possession of the card

I always get asked for my security code when i am placing an order on the phone....including where i order my pizza from...

The previous postings are correct--I'm normally asked for the credit card security code when I place a phone order anyplace.

 

But there may have also been some sort of update or glitch in QVC's system that day.  Wednesday I also place a phone order, via automated ordering.  I didn't have a problem with it until the end when it was trying to complete the order.  I waited and waited, then finally a real live customer representative came on the line to finish the transaction.  Later, when I went into my order status online, i saw that I had been charged double the shipping.  I had ordered two items and it showed the shipping for both twice.  However, the total was correct.  Huh?  It was just a little too strange for me and in the end I cancelled the order, for other reasons as well.

 

I'm finding so many errors and glitches with so many companies, both online and with real company representatives, nowadays.  With all the identity theft going on, it makes one leery.

I worked in a call center and when I had to take payments the security code was part of the deal. Typing it in on a computer yourself or giving it to someone to type in on a computer is the same thing
