Why do all the female hosts say AH all the time? People who talk for a living should be able to control that.

If they would just talk a little slower, they would not have to say, "AHHHHHHHH" all the time to fill in dead air.
Lisa Mason was the best host as she NEVER said, "Ah" or "Um".

Professional or not, they need to be able to think quickly on their feet. Not only are they keeping in mind what they want to say about the product, what the vendor is saying, what the call-in customer is saying, how much time is left for them present the item, the name of the models and their normal size and height, etc., they are listening to the producer in their ear piece. I would say that is a lot going on at the same time, and they are doing a GREAT job of it!

@cyndilit, believe it or not, it takes some training to speak well in a public forum. Ask anyone who has had media training. Videos are used during interviews to demonstrate to you how you speak and how to improve on performance. All professionals benefit from practice. Some are better at it than others. LM

I is just a bad habit. And if you are publicly speaking, it is a habit you should not have. Of course Shopping channel hosts are the worst at having these bad speaking habits. Maybe why they are shopping channel hosts......

I speak for a living, but I've never had an earpiece in my ear and someone trying to give me information while I'm speaking extemporaneously the way the hosts do. Have you? If so, could you share your experience with that and what you did to avoid saying "um" or "ah" while you did it? I think that would throw me off, so I'd love to hear how you dealt with that.

TV show hostong is not public speaking. It's hard to speak continuously for an hour or more without a speech in front of you.

Media training would benefit newspeople who basically just read and go on to the next subject. The hosts on shopping channels are talking continuously only having notes and not exact texts to stick with, someone talking in their ear as well as vendors talking and need to watch the monitor also. As far as I'm concerned - an ah here and there doesn't change what they are saying and doesn't affect my life in any way!

I dont care so much about the ah or um. It’s better than those who are unable to pronounce words correctly or have trembling voices.
