Why is it bad luck to wear Opals if you weren't born in October?

Don't know why, but I have also heard you are not supposed to buy them for yourself....as that will bring on bad luck.

I did purchase a beautiful opal ring when I was on a cruise eons ago......the stone fell out and I never found it.  Since my bd is not in October and I bought it for myself, perhaps that was my bad luck.  Woman LOL

I've never heard that about opals.  I just find them to be very fragile and easily chipped.

I once bought myself a pretty opal ring which I eventually hid - hid it so well I never found it even when I moved out of that house.   Bad luck or just plain carelessness?

@Evansmimi To me that's just a silly superstition and I don't buy into those!

No idea when, or where this started, but I've always heard it and I'm not tempting fate Woman Wink

How does any superstition get started, really?

Bad luck - no - I have my Mom's and she wasn't born in Oct either.  They do clip easily and, opals have a lot of water content in the stone, so should not wear in sub-freezing temps or it could crack.

It might have to do w/The Moonstone (an early mystery novel).

I heard that years ago.  I totally forgot about it.  I did buy an opal ring and not born in Oct and I am still here to talk about it. LOL
