THINK before you buy. THINK what you'll leave behind for someone to sort through, clean up.
This lifestyle isn't worth your money or the anxiety you're creating for those left behind.

@SanFerryAnne I have to say I am at a loss to understand your post. Are you suggesting we all live our lives without anything that makes us happy in order that we don't leave a pile of stuff behind?

I have not collected a pile of junk (as you put it) but things that make me happy and how I spend my money should not be a concern to you or anyone else.

My husband and I and his brother and wife cleaned out my mother-in-law's home and we didn't consider it a burden. What one person sees as so called junk is a treasure to another.

I would hate to live my life worried that every purchase that I love and that brings me pleasure would be a burden to someone else in the future. How sad.

Anything I have bought is bought for a reason - even if it only made me happy temporarily!! The parents often did so much more for their kids and often had to stop their lives to care for their children.

I was happy to go through my parents "stuff" and it was a wonderful experience!! Many great memories with tears and smiles. I actually learned a lot about their lives that I did not know.

If those adult children are now too busy, too selfish or don't want to clean stuff out then they can just have it hauled away!!

@SanFerryAnne "you may enjoy it for a season" ... shouldn't the emphasis here be on enjoy? If you have a memory of joy isn't that important?

We all search for balance in our lives. Some miss the mark. There are of course hoarders that keep everything and have mental health issues and cause their families and community problems(mostly themselves). But that is not the average person.

I find it cathartic to clear out items and organize.Many items can be donated or passed on to some one to reuse. I also enjoy purchasing new items that I can afford. Humans like 'stuff'.

Many of the thoughts expressed by @beach-mom are mine.

You might think about not generalizing next post because everyone does not fall into the same category as having a house full of junk to leave for the kids.

@SanFerryAnne , I think you meant well, and I won't take your post personally. I have a small home and " stuff " can build up quickly. I actually like getting rid of things ,for me, it just makes me feel better. What is left behind , well, it will have to be dealt with. Keep what you want, if anything, and throw the rest in a dumpster , I'm not as sentimental as I used to be so hopefully when that time comes , there won't be a lot of stuff. However I make no promises, because my garage is a nightmare. 😂
