I understand for retailers, especially one as huge as QVC, Memorial Day signals the beginning of summer, and the sale of grills, beach wear, and umbrellas, and to do that they want to create a light, summery, breezy feeling... However, Memorial Day was not created to be the "official start of summer," it is to honor those who have sacrificed their lives to give us the freedoms we cherish. While it should not be the sole focus in this forum, I thought it was pretty tacky how Nancy shut up Chef Tony this morning on Thrill of the Grill when she said, "Happy Memorial Day" (which may not be an appropriate greeting anyway) after which he tried to thank our men and women in uniform for their service, including his son who he was trying to say served in Afghanistan. It was extremely rude, I felt, to not allow a couple of seconds to talk about what this holiday is really about.
