Perhaps it is a regional thing. I have always heard it pronounced "empire". And I go way back...

Probably a regional thing....... I've only heard it called the French pronounciation since I wore high-waisted dresses in high school (we're talking dinosaur days!). "Empire" sounds bizarre to me.
