MA sales tax free under 175 $ purchase

I have written under feedback twice asking the question as to why I am being charged sales tax on my clothing purchases when in Massachusetts we do not have to pay tax on clothing. Even shoes are tax free.

I have not received a response. I have been shopping here on line for about 15 years. Most of my purchases are beauty. I do have many items of clothing and shoes. I have to say there is not a brand that I am loyal to when it comes to clothing because most of the purchases either pilled or were ill fitting.

I added these comments because I wanted to show that I have tried most of the brands here at the Q.

If anyone has any feedback or can offer any help I would appreciate it. Thank you .

Re: MA sales tax free under 175 $ purchase

@Grace6663582 Years ago I had this happen to me at the QVC outlet (in PA) and I live in PA where QVC is based!

I purchased footwear which is not taxable in PA unless it is for formal wear, athletic wear, or sport. This was a pair of casual sandals.

After many attempts to explain this to corporate at QVC, I phoned the PA Department of Revenue. All of a sudden my issue was resolved! I got my tax money refunded.

You may have success in contacting your MA Department of Revenue and explaining the issue.

Best of luck!

@Grace6663582

Check the wording on your state's tax policy.

I recently had this argument with an in-state on line vendor over a coat which should have been tax free.  They didn't want the hassle of dealing with their billing vendor.  Of course, I cancelled the sale.

However, as I read through the tax policy, I discovered that certain clothing items were indeed taxable if designated: sports or evening attire.  My car coat didn't fit these categories.

It depends on how Q is registered in MA. They may not be able to sell tax free. This is the case in a lot of states for many companies.

I buy many clothes from QVC. I live in MA. They do not charge me tax on these items. MA will investigate and believe me QVC will be forced to refund any tax they illegally collected from you. MA is very aggressive on this issue.

If this was anything more than an error on QVCs part with the OP or a misunderstanding on her part, it would be all over the place.  There's no way this could be a widespread issue and not be on here of all places.  I would expect to see it on the news actually.

Re: MA sales tax free under 175 $ purchase

I live in PA not far from QVC.  They charged me sales tax on a pair of shoes that were not taxable.

I fought with them for months to return my money.  I got a letter from corporate telling me they already forwarded my money to the state and couldn't  return it.

I contacted the state, filled out a form and the state returned my money.

Don't hold your breath waiting for QVC to return it.  I don't often buy shoes or clothing from QVC anymore.  That left a bad taste in my mouth.  It was dishonest.

And, if I do, I always make sure no tax is being charge before the transaction is completed.

I refuse to buy any supps from SHQ, here in MD we do not pay tax on health items like that, I have told thrm that and they say I need to take it up with my state tax dept, I tell them, no I just dont need to buy these from you !! Once in a while I may make a Lessman purchase on HSN, no tax.
