I wish they would stop saying ,how many of a product has been sold. It dosen't make me want to buy it just because maybe over 1000 of a particular item has been sold. In fact it may even deter me from buying it,especially if it hsappens to be clothing or handbags or shoes.

I'm not a fan of In the Kitchen, but DH used to watch it from time to time to see if there was something new we might want. He's gone now, so I really don't watch it. But what drove me nutty was the constant "How many sold now?" followed immediately by "And in this show?" Is this some kind of ego trip to say how many someone is responsible for selling? Or just a way to encourage more people to buy. It did nothing for me except cause me to leave the room or flip channels. I agree with the OP - if it's clothing or accessories, it usually causes me to back off -I don't want tolook like everyone else.

It's a sales tactic; you must know this by now. It might work on some people and they are not going to stop because a few people don't like it. That is their job and that's how they are required to handle it.

Quite right. If sooooooooooo many other people thought it was a good product at the right price, then surely you must think so too. That ploy does not work on me, but sadly, others do. But I am being much more mindful now about my purchases.

They do it because it works -- each time a host does this, it generates many more sales. It was even written in The NY Times article about David Venable and QVC. The producer can see sales numbers in real time; he/she prompts David in his ear exactly when to quote the number again.

The most annoying part of it is that they will INTERRUPT the guest vendor right in the middle of a sentence to give you that stupid sale number update. The constant sale number updates are just one of several irritating things that lately keeps me tuning to other channels 99% of the time.

I have to agree, it's silly to tell us how many sold. First, how do we know they didn't just make a number up? Second, we have no context. Is 1000 a big number considering the product is on TV everywhere in the country? Or is it miniscule? Such sayings are filler for the host. I just ignore it.

It's the bandwagon technique of advertising: If other people are buying it, you're "supposed" to want to jump on board and buy it too.

I remember years ago when Q & HSN first aired, the TV viewers could see a "counter" of how many items are sold in a given segment. Not sure why they stopped that.
