The shopping cart was invented in Oklahoma City in 1939 by Sylvan N. Goldman, the owner of the Humpty Dumpty grocery store chain in Oklahoma City. On one afternoon, the grocery executive spotted two folding chairs in his office, and he suddenly had a Eureka! moment.

We call it a "basket." Honey, go get a basket and I'll be in the produce section.

A buggy is something that requires a fancy horse.  It's what my grandma liked to ride in on Sunday afternoons.

@mormel20 On the West Coast I've never heard them called anything except shopping carts. At least in California and Washington.

Born & raised in NYC, now live in VA, 7 minutes from DC -- always call them "cart."

I'm from PA and we always referred to them as buggys. The supermarkets, though, refer to them as shopping carts.

Downstate Illinois here, never used any term but cart.  Maybe sometimes shopping cart.

Stores here do have those larger plastic baskets too if one is only buying a few items.  I call those shopping baskets.

We call them a basket. We both grew up in West Texas and lived in many areas until we retired and came back home. We never changed from basket. The sign says "Return Carts Here," but they are baskets to us.

Shopping cart for me.  I lived up north till I was 14.

I have lived in Atlanta since 1970.  Here I hear people say buggy and I also hear shopping carts. Lots of Yankees living here now.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?
