Easy Pay using bank Debit card

Looking to purchase an item that can be purchased using 4 easy payments. How does that work when using your bank debit card? Do they put a hold on your debit card for the entire purchase price amount and then just actually debit from your card the monthly payments? It also says that easy pay offers are subject to approval, do they do a credit check?
