No one has ever called me hon or babe, but if they did I would not be offended. I believe it is intended to be a friendly not condescending. Now, I would be offended if someone called me an old bag. LOL
When I taught high school I had a terrible time remembering names so I just started calling my students "sweetie", it turned out to be a positive thing because the kids really liked it.
What matters especially in this era of meanness and hatred is that someone is nice to you. To me "hon" shows warmth.

I don't like being called hon, darlin, babe, dear, etc. but I abhor when someone calls me "young lady". Now that is condescending implying I am old and need to be talked down to! I know I'm old and don't need anyone thinking that will flatter me!!! No problem with you guys because it encompasses a group that includes both male and females.

If you don't like "hon", "honey," "sweetheart" pass quickly through Oklahoma and never eat at a small town cafe! ![]()
It is especially popular with older ladies who work at those places and I would feel cheated if not treated with some affectionate term like that. I love it.
What I REALLY don't like is being called "Miss MY FIRST NAME." TO me that is really offensive and is for little girls who are a pain or very very old ladies who have memory issues and need petted. I hate when people call me that.
But "Hon, do you want orange juice with that" is a great way to start a day!

You could be called a lot worse and I know I have.
So endearing terms are accepted by me and I use them since I have been living in the south.

It doesn't bother me at all unless it's in a professional capacity like @Caaareful Shopper described. Even at work, I've had clients call me dear, honey or sweetie and it's just them and it doesn't bother me. But I've had other male clients do it and they are being condescending. A couple think they are cute. The worst was a male client blowing me kisses.

I sort of like hon or sweetie, even auntie from a kid. Better than Hey Lady!!!

"Hey Girl!" grates on me as a greeting as well.

I hate being called mam! Can I help you mam? Thank you mam! I am not an old lady yet! Mam makes me feel like a 90 year old lady. I'm not even 50 yet! Its just such a formal greeting. Sorry, just had to vent that one!

My husband (not "hubby" or "hubs") and I are on the same page regarding supposedly affection words like "babe," "hon." We don't like or use them.

I have no problem with these names as long as it's deemed appropriate. I always call the younger girls, ie. cashiers at the grocery store or the young tech at the Vet's office " hon", I don't see the harm in it........it's what I call my adult kids too!
