Re: Does anyone else not like Christmas?

I'll admit this is not my favorite time of year.

LOL!!!  Mr. Dickens must be so pleased that his lovely story is so relevant all these years later!  So many real-life Scrooges make the play so much more meaningful to the rest of us!  Woman LOL

I'm sure most of us know at least a couple of them!

Re: Does anyone else not like Christmas?

I like the spirit of Christmas. I like winter especially since I've retired and don't have to worry about weather. What I don't like is all the sales, all the cheesy movies, and the electronics that are a deal(!). I think the electronics are a deal because by February they will be outdated and something else will be BRAND SPANKING NEW and we will have to have it. I also dislike Christmas in July.

When I lose the TV controller, it's always in some remote destination.

Re: Does anyone else not like Christmas?

I'm not religious so Christmas is not a big deal in my household at this stage of my life. When my son was little and believed in Santa, the holiday was fun, but of course that stage of a child's life is short lived. I still enjoy getting together with relatives and all the special holiday foods. I must say though, it's my least favorite holiday and I don't enjoy winter either.

Christmas is what you make it! As grand or as minimal as you want! I learned a long time ago that you have a choice everyday as to how your attitude will be, life is short. Even Scrooge found that out! It is a happy season but you have to make it so!

Re: Does anyone else not like Christmas?

People put way too much importance on giving gifts at Christmas.  Sometimes the greatest gift you can give someone is your presence not presents.   Visiting shut ins, baking cookies and making homemade candy with the grandchildren and the family, attending Christmas concerts etc., is more meaningful than any package under the tree.  Making memories with family and friends and reflecting on life and the true meaning of Christmas.  My parents and one sister are gone now so I understand how the holidays are difficult for some.  The adults in our families stopped exchanging gifts a few years ago and now we just buy gifts for our grandchildren.  That was such a relief.  I love Christmas but not all the commercialism and the pressure to buy, buy, buy.  That is not the reason for the season.

I think Christmas is a beautiful time of the year. I enjoy the music and going for a drive in the evening to look at the homes all decorated. I am not into all the shopping, but do buy for my 7 family members.

Sometimes it can be very lonely not having any family. I have made it better by not buying presents at all, no using of credit cards.... Christmas is not about any of us. The USA has tried to make it about buying, wanting and greed ...the total over-do but the key is ignoring that pressure of commercialism. Children being programmed and enabled to think is all about getting expensive electronics luxury items and is all about them is a little sad and off putting at times. I do not buy gifts at all now and yes it would be so nice to have a friend to share some time with but being disabled and very ill....I cannot get out as much. The holidays were much more enjoyable years ago but is what I make it this year which may be my last. Cheers! Come to my house for a toast. I do tell good jokes LOL

@Stormygirl I am with you in spirit and raising a toast to you and your lovely sense of humor. Christmas is what is in our hearts, not our wallets. I wish you all the blessings of this season.

I totally agree @Jacie.  For years I let the holidays disappointment me.  Christmas day at about 8p was such an utter let down.  What was I expecting?  I'm not sure.

I finally smartened up and realized I truly enjoy decorating and cooking.  I love the winter...the cold, the overcast, the snow, the short days.  (I must have been a cave dweller in a former life!)  I enjoy buying and giving gifts for those that show appreciation and ignore those that don't.

Everything I do throughout the month is for my enjoyment. I stay positive and upbeat and share that with others. If others feel like they benefit from it, then that's awesome.  If not, I really don't care.

Re: Does anyone else not like Christmas?

I love Chritmas. I have lived in NYC all my life (67 yrs). The Capital of All Things Commercial. And yet...

- I go to numerous tree lightings around the City where people are reverential, and children's eyes are full of wonder.

- I attend neighborhood Holiday Strolls in all 5 boroughs. Small businesses decorate, offer refreshments, streets are lit, and people wish each other the Best of the Season.

- worked as hospital RN until my retirement. Miralces on Christmas Eve? you bet! and, no, I am not a good, practicing Christian.

- hospital employess always decorated in Hanukkah/Christmas colors. My unit's favorite decoration was Nurse Esther's old Menorah. One light never worked!

- Churches are full every year. Someone has always invited me to their service.

- Every toy/gift/food drive proves the generosity that Christmas encourages.

I will never give up on Christmas. Peace to you and to those you cherish whatever feast you celebrate this magical time of year.
