Dress code or not, how we dress tells others who we are and often what we think we are or want to be.

The lion has a mane to send a signal.  Like it or not, what you wear sends a very clear message to others.  So think about it and dress for how you want others to see you.  Dress for who you want to be!

How we ACT sends a bigger signal to others!!!  I have never judged anyone on how they dress when I meet them but how they act and treat others!!!  Workwise,
I have observed that some of the most conservative old fashioned people's (think Emily
Post) idea on how to dress did the worst work and usually did not fool anyone after a while!!  I interviewed for new workers often and it was never about what they wore but how they answered questions and were intelligent!!

@Pook BUT you thought they were conservative and old fashioned because of the way they dressed.  Which is what I said.  People assume things from your clothing, and people send a message through how they dress.

@Sooner  One can find what others wear as conservative but there was no judgement about hiring.  The person with the best resume and most intellignet answers got the job.  No matter what the dress style was!!  What I stated was that my observation was that dress has no bearing on how a person does their job!!!  Hiring should not be based on type of dress but my observation after 40 years on the job was that hiring someone because of the antiquated thought that conservative dressing got the best worker was in most cases wrong!!!!  No judging until after hired and they did not function well!!

I still believe in dignity.  I think the way you express that in clothing says a lot about what you think of yourself.

I think dignity is lost when a woman is made to feel she has to wear a certain type of clothing and not allowed to think for herself!!!  I am and always have been confident in who I am and what I like and choose to wear!  It is those who have given in to the antiquated myth of dressing to cover their body and wearing only certain types of conservative clothing have no confidence thus loosing dignity by not being themselves!!  Dignity is when you are yourself and have the confidence to wear what you like and are comfortable in!!!  Also, there is no dignity in being so judgemental on what anyone else wears!!  Who a person is has nothing to do with clothing choices!!

@Pook   I agree with much of what you say. I do believe, however, that our choices of what we wear says something about us. In my case, I am conservative but not super conservative....kind of "middle of the road" in the choices I make...which, when I think about it, I'm just kind of a "middle of the road" kind of gal who likes to find.... what, to me, is a "happy medium".

@Pook Oh I do agree, but I was saying it's people's impression of you when they see you.  And if you are a person who has some outlandish dress style, or hot dress style, people will assume things that you might have to overcome. . . Woman WinkWoman Very Happy let's say!  Woman LOL

And about judging, I am talking about opinions.  I think people all have an immediate impression of others we encounter and part of that is how they dress and the message it sends.  It's what animals and humans do.

It's part of "that looks like someone I'd like" to "RUN!!! RUN AWAY!"  Part of our survival instincts, past experiences, and signals that we all use.  It's no different than "stove/hot."

But to let that keep us from seeing and knowing someone for who they are is what our human side should avoid. And that's what you do!

We only have a few seconds to make a first impression. And it's not our actions.
