@santorini How many people do you know who are dying to operate a sewing machine in a factory? We've trained our youth on computers. You'll never get these techno-kids into a factory. We no longer have that type of workforce. The Industrial Revolution is a ship that has sailed.
Oklahoma has a robust program of 2 year college that train people for many other jobs than high tech. Not everyone has the ability to work in high tech, and our plumber makes a great living.
When people need to work to earn a living, a lot of people will want jobs. How will the country survive without plumbers, carpenters, drivers, farmers, water plant operators, fence builders, mechanica, aircraft mechanicanics etc.
You don't work because it's fun. You work to eat and have shelter and clothes. Not everybody can live the dream--so what are they supposed to do?

@the geeger wrote:I totally agree with you. I am trying very hard NOT to buy anything from China. QVC doesn't say where the item was manufactured, so it is very hard to find out until you get it.
@the geeger On the other hand, a lot of things we do buy from China are things we don't need. And lots and lots of our tax dollars go to support people who have no or low paying jobs.
Yes, it would take year to bring back manufacturing, but have we lost the incentive to think about the future? About what would be good for our country long term?

@STYLE wrote:STOP SELLING GOODS MADE IN CHINA!!! THE RESISTANCE TO THEIR GOODS HAS GOT TO START SOMEWHERE. I FOR ONE WILL START CHECKING COUNTRY OF ORIGIN. IF IT'S CHINA I'LL PASS C,HINA IS NOT OUR FRIEND
Oh please, come aboard the reality train ..... the U.S. imports more from China than any other country in the world. You are a little out of the loop when it comes to information, so stop BEGGING QVC or anyone else to change anything until you fully understand the situation.
If you have just now decided to "start checking country of origin" then it's pretty clear you are not well-versed on trade policies and agreements. It's NOT up to QVC (or any other retailer) to avoid goods imported from anywhere ... that's on YOU, the consumer, to buy as you see fit.
Of course, you will have to be willing to spend a LOT more money to buy things made elsewhere. Are you willing to do that?

@Sooner wrote:I don't buy from China whenever I can and I make every effort not to. We have given over control of so many things to China. So we are forever in their grasp until otherwise, and they'll call the shots because people don't care.
Russia? No way would I buy something I know was made there.
ITA, but China isn't stupid .... they make products that the world needs (not just the U.S.) and offer those things at a competitive price, so other countries all over buy from them.

@Tinkrbl44 I'm not going to argue all the "yes but's" but I am saying that we could certainly do something productive to bring mfg. back to this country in a significant way, but people don't have the desire or the stomach to do anything about it.
Press your elected officials and don't buy junk you don't need from China, and pay more for quality from USA and from other non-China countries. Will we do it? Not a snowball's chance. Could we do it? Absolutely.

You are SPOT ON ..... and I have to say that I'm really shocked at how many people don't understand that .... or know even the basics of how international commerce and trade agreements actually work. The OP is a perfect example of that.

@Sooner Any manufacturing buildings around here are now condos. Are there any around you? These buildings are huge and rarely have stayed empty.

You know what's sad? The fact that so many US companies didn't want to pay American wages so hence they manufacture products overseas and labor for 10 foreign workers is equal to 1 American workers wage they did pay here. Instead of giving the consumer a better price they take the profit. Its all about the almighty dollar. Us consumers can do a lot but we don't want to, it's too hard on us. Sad.

I'm not disputing anything you said, but to "bring manufacturing back to the USA" isn't a sure thing. I doubt we'd get the outcome we hope for.
First it would take years and millions -- no, billions -- to build manufacturing facilities and then who would work in a factory anymore unless it was for a rather good wage? Take that out to calculating the costs involved in manufacturing, wages, etc etc, and the products would cost more than a LOT of Americans can or would be willing to pay ..... so what's the point?
