Analogy, Similie and Metaphor

An analogy is a comparison of two or more things.  An analogy can be a similie (using like or as) and a metaphor is comparing two unlike things:  no like, no as.  Cameron made a good similie when he described his green sweater as being like the olive in your cocktail.  Shawn, your analogy was an attempted metaphor describing the fall of night and a curtain.  Two unlike things being compared with no like and no as.

Just FYI, a metaphor isn't comparing two unlike things. It's comparing two like things WITHOUT using the words like or as. It only differs from a simile in this way. Both are comparing like things.  A simile uses like or as, but a metaphor does not.

Now I need to know my test score.  😉😉😉

Wow, its a good thing you are retired and no longer teaching because you spelled simile wrong and you gave the wrong definition of a metaphor. Now what's that saying about people living in glass houses throwing stones...

We’re never too old to learn, or to teach that which we know. Yesterday I had a pre-op check-up (for surgery that is now postponed). When I had my chest x-ray, I told the tech that the reason I was limping was Achilles Tendonitis, a side effect of medication I was taking. She had never heard of that. I explained that certain antibiotics as well as statins can cause tendonitis. She thanked me for the information.

Plus,  you have consider metonymy if you include synecdoche .

Ahh, let’s call the whole thing off!

Re: Analogy, Similie and Metaphor

This post was a "pop quiz" ... not a 'SAT prep thread' brought to you by @Pro At This, a retired school teacher, still teaching.

Looks like most of you were able to find the errors in the post, so I'm sure you all have great quiz scores.  Most all of you, no doubt are very proud of yourselves in your various comments of showing these corrections.

Regardless, how proud you feel by your comments, being a Principal, I would send most of you back to Kindergarten, so each of you could review what you have forgotten ... a refresher course, which is much needed.

All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten

by Robert Fulghum

Most of what I really need
To know about how to live
And what to do and how to be
I learned in kindergarten.
Wisdom was not at the top
Of the graduate school mountain,
But there in the sandpile at Sunday school.

These are the things I learned:

Share everything.
Play fair.
Don't hit people.
Put things back where you found them.
Clean up your own mess.
Don't take things that aren't yours.
Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody.
Wash your hands before you eat.
Flush.
Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.
Live a balanced life -
Learn some and think some
And draw and paint and sing and dance
And play and work everyday some.
Take a nap every afternoon.
When you go out into the world,
Watch out for traffic,
Hold hands and stick together.
Be aware of wonder.
