An "as is" item is backordered?

I ordered some shorts

 

a625531

 

Never received them because they are backordered.

 

I'm confused, thinking "as is" items are available but not brand new, used or display or returns.

I have also seen "as-is' items listed as backordered....I just skip them and move on. Makes no sense to me.

To me it makes sense. If a customer has notified QVC that they are returning an item, QVC is then awaiting its arrival from whichever delivery method. Seems they've returned it to stock before it's physically back in stock.
