My area has neither Uber nor bus transportation.  No taxi service either.

Re: 91-Year Old Lady Who Called into Gary's D&C Show on Q2

My Mom drove until a few months before she passed, but only around town.  She never even went to a mall that is really close (no freeway needed).  I would pick her up and we would go out to lunch so often and also when my kids had no school or short days, we would take her with us to lunch.  My DH and I would take her to dinner out of town, etc.  I'm thinking of the day when I can't drive.  I have to renew my license this year again and I only drive short distances.  Traffic is horrible here.  I'm good at online shopping so that will help me, but I do love sometime to get out and do some errands.  Everytime I have a doctor or dentist appointment, I feel so grateful I can go on my own.  Years ago I had some specialists out of town, but now all my doctors, lab, etc. are local.  I would hate to bother my kids for everything.  It's a worry.  Never used  Uber, etc., but sure I will someday.

@SurferWife

I missed the call but my 92 year old mother is legally blind (macular degeneration) and very hard of hearing.  She has become afraid to go out.

But just a few days ago she called me about the BL wreath that was the TSV.  She thought she could hear the details enough to ask about it and to have me order it for her.  My sister and I try to meet all of her needs, and to let her stay in the home  she shared with dad. I do buy her some clothing from QVC and other outfits from nearby stores.  She still enjoys looking nice.

I enjoy being out and about and I drive to and from stores often.  It scares me to think of the day when I won't be able to drive because of my age and I will be stuck in the house unless someone takes me shopping.  I guess for those who are in that situation on line shopping is a bonus, not only on the Q but for food and essentials.

There are also programs in my area which provide transportation for the elderly through kind people who volunteer their time.

@spider woman  They will have self driving cars soon....best thing ever for the older boomer population who will be able to get out and about👍👍👍👏👎👎👎

God bless her. I would take that lady shopping or anywhere she wanted to go.

When my Mom couldn't drive I took her everywhere. She LOVED to go to the QVC outlet store in Frazer. We shopped there at least twice a month then went to lunch. I loved to take her on day trips to Baltimore for crab cakes and up to NY to see a Broadway show. She passed 9 years ago and I still miss her every day.

@Marp. around here, Central MA, the Senior Centers have volunteers to take people to/from medical appointments and/or, they have buses that will pick you up and take you places for a nominal fee; they also provide shopping trips to our mall and area grocery stores.

Re: 91-Year Old Lady Who Called into Gary's D&C Show on Q2

When I had cataract surgery a friend took me and waited while I had it done. Several weeks later I had an appointment for the other eye and it happened to be a day when my son had to work and the two friends had another appointment.

I had planned on taking a taxi but the Drs office wouldn’t allow that and instead contacted a local organization that has volunteers to drive people.

My dog walker took me to the surgery. When it was over a kind lady had parked in front and drove me home. I thanked her profusely! She even asked if I needed her to stay awhile.

They don’t accept payment, only contributions. I contribute yearly!

Just made me tear up!  Old folks just make me turn sappy.  Gary said to her, "who wants to go to the store anyway", after she said she did all her shopping on QVC, and she replied, "well, I don't have anyone to take me".  BRING ON THE TEARS FOR SURFERWIFE!  It always makes me think of my mama when I hear a sweet little old lady call in.  I just thought, "oh, if you were my mama I'd take you to the store!" I miss her so much. Heart

Anyhoo, back to work.

Made me tear up also. Missing my mom too....

Maybe. Older adults don't always feel safe doing things, by themselve (shopping etc.) or in using Uber, Lyft, driveless cars. Even younger people have safety issues using Uber/Lyft.

Maybe for a MD appointment driveless cars would be an option.
