When I had cats, I put their food on the counter in the hall bathroom. It was the only place I could think of that the dogs couldn't get to. The cats jumped up on the commode and then to the counter. I have a friend who puts it in the laundry room. She puts a gate at the door that the dogs can't jump over.

We have the same problem with our cats and our golden retriever. We keep the cat's food on top of the dryer. They jump up there to eat. I've also used a cat tree house putting the food on a higher shelf with lower shelves so the cats could climb from shelf to shelf to get to the food.

Maybe the dog isn't getting enough of its own food? Just a guess!

We don't free feed, our cats have meal times and eat all their food. They are fed up on a counter so the dogs don't bother them.

@ValuSkr I dont normally comment on snarky comments on these boards, but today I'm making an exception. Why would you feel the need to imply that those of us with this problem aren't giving our dogs enough to eat? Your comment was so not helpful! My golden gets plenty of love, care and food, but he'd eat the cat food no matter how much he gets to eat. Get over yourself!!

The dog gets fed in the kitchen.
The cats, when we had them, got fed in the laundry room.
We trained the dog that he isn't allowed in the laundry room.
All our cats are gone now, but the dog still doesn't go into the laundry room.

I seriously doubt that. Dogs are notorious for not policing themselves or reaching a level of feeling full and satisfied to where they would turn down more food. In other words, they'll eat anything and everything in sight, if given the chance.
