I feed our dog raw also, @AmericanBulldogMom.  I have had 5 dogs before him and he is the first that I did this with.  I can't believe the health issues this cleared up for him.  I was always turned off by the idea of raw before, but it is actually easier than cooking for him the way I did for my others.  He has never had "dog food" and neither did my last two.

I buy a raw beef grind with the proper blend of muscle, organ, and bone.  Is that how you do it?

Anyway, with sticking with the topic of this thread, I would say my guy is spoiled because this is not an inexpensive way to feed, but the money we have saved in vet bills and meds more than makes up for it.

@denisemb He is just gorgeous! I have a friend who wants a Bengal so bad. Lol! Good for you for doing your own research. Hearing them crunch those bones is so satisfying- something only raw feeders appreciate and understand. 😉 Those gorgeous pearly whites too. More and more are vets are “evolving”, shall we say, which is wonderful for our pets. Hopefully you will find one near you sooner rather than later. Thanks for sharing!

After our 9 month old pup was diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease at a specialist hospital ( many tests later ) we were told to put him on steroids, immunosuppressant drugs, and a canned prescription food.  They said he should eat a limited ingredient diet and the number of ingredients on the can was well over 50!  I said thanks for the diagnosis, but no thanks for their treatment plan. I found a good holistic vet.  We have never looked back.  He has never had the drugs and we hope we can keep him on track.  So far so good.  He is 17 months old.

And yes, his teeth are pearly white and his breath is great!

@tends2dogs  So glad to hear how well a raw diet is working for your pupper. I always feed raw, but I do vary how I feed it. Mostly I balance it on my own (using the 80/10/5/5 ratio), sometimes I feed premade raw and sometimes I even feed by using a base mix and just adding the raw meat to it. It really just depends on what I have in the house, what I have thawed and portioned out or if I have forgotten to thaw his food. Oops LOL! So the premade raw and base mix are kept on hand for those “emergencies”. LOL! But as a whole I prefer to balance my own. It’s quite inexpensive this way. It also helps that my husband and son are big hunters. So I feed a lot of wild game too. Nothing goes to waste.

@AmericanBulldogMom  That is great that you can mix it up like that.  I am sticking to one protein for now because he is doing well on it and was told to start him (because of his digestive problems) with a novel protein.  Beef was it.  He had been on cooked turkey and chicken when his problem began.  Having the fresh game and a dog with a healthy digestion would be awesome.  Maybe my guy will outgrow some of his issues.  In the meantime, the raw has been a lifesaver.  People are so afraid of contamination, but if it has been frozen......well, you know.  Also as far as handling raw meat,  if anyone has a kitchen and cooks for their family, they are coming in contact with raw meat.  I have a bottle of spray bleach next to my sink and just use common sense.

Most vets aren't going to recommend this when they have a display of food in their lobby that they are trying to sell.  They also don't learn this way in vet school......not when the pet food companies are funding the colleges.

Good to hear from another enlightened pet owner LOL.
