what do you feed your dogs? i am concerned over all the pet food problems so i cook a bit of extra and give my dogs some, they have been doinggreat on this. my vet told me that as long as it has eough protein, people food doesn't hurt them. the reason that the pet food companies say not to give your pet people food is so they can sell more dog food.
besides, what didpeople fedtheir petsbefore they had pet food to purchase?

There is no reason you can't give a dog people food as long as it's a balanced diet and I would add a multiple vitamin. My relatives raised dogs and never gave them commercial dog food. The dogs were healthy and lived long lives. I think dog food is more of a convenience in our fast paced society today. I have a cook book that caters to dogs and cats and most of the recipes are so simple, but it takes time to prepare the food.

If you are going to feed solely people food to your animals then you have to know what types and mixtures to ensure your pet is getting enough nutrients. It is not all about just feeding enough protein. You would need to add supplements and vitamins to avoid health issues in the future. Plus you have to take into consideration seasonings that you cook with may not be the best things to give dogs. It's also not all about selling more dog food. The better brands put a lot of research into finding an acceptible formula. And most of the recalls that happen - well there really isn't real danger to any animals in the majority but just something found during random sampling that could possibly cause issues and is voluntarily recalled even though no incidents.

I home cook for our dog. Today’s meal is basmati rice, boiled organic Hamburg, green beans, carrots, squash, baked sweet potato. I freeze it. It lasts about five days. I make it in a small crockpot.

With the dog food companies ,they have substituted protein from beef ,chicken and so with the peas, legumes to save money, my dogs always for many years have got people food, real protein ,veggies, fruit, i just changed dog food after the fda list came out.

@Pook is correct. It's not all about the money with pet foods. The better dog food companies do a tremendous amount of research to get the right amount of nutrients. Giving your dog protein is not enough. I feed my dog a high quality kibble. This is what I've always done.

Dogs need fresh protein, not just what is in kibble.

In addition to the dry food I always add some boiled chicken or hamburg.

Older, mature, non-working dogs probably get more protein than they need. How do you know what your dog's nutritional needs are? They're quite different from yours. Your vet needs to quit giving squirrelly nutritional advice.
