Crating is not cruel, except when used as a punishment, which should never happen.  As others have said, it is your dog's safe place.  We have always (except for the short time we were housebreaking them) left the door open for them to come and go at will.

Always make sure no collar is on ,inside the crate,   many dogs like their crate, as they grow older, from my experience it is the only way to housebreak a puppy, now when you leave the house ,crate pup,NO COLLAR,my dogs have not been crated when older,once you can trust the dog.

When you lose some one you L~O~V~E, that Memory of them, becomes a TREASURE.

Personally,  I hate crating...I think its so unfair.  If I train my dogs from the beginning,  I've never had a problem leaving them out...that is when they're broken of chewing, and potty outside.
