@CrazyDaisy wrote:I find it rather insensitive those who continue to bring up pet insurance to the OP who choose to not purchase it. It is like throwing it in her face that they can pay expensive bills and she cannot. As someone mentioned above they pay $150 a month, for 10 years that is $18,000, not to mention paying for what is not covered. That is not a small amount of money and not an option for the vast majority of pet owners. How and how much people choose to pay for vet bills and pet care is a personal decision. The decision is not dependent on how much they love their pets.
@CrazyDaisy I almost didn't mention pet insurance but didn't want her to think I could pay the $600 bill for my dog and continuing to have Vet visits without thinking about it. I did say she was the first dog I had pet insurance for. I certainly didn't mean to sound insensitive. I apologize to the OP if she thought so.

@CrazyDaisy thank you for your kind words. i did not take offense at the insurance mentions. i paid for years and years for insurance for my late husband. AD&D. unfortunatly it didn't cover the cancer he died of. point taken. i not a person who will invest in "what might happen"
many are, but not me. i'm just waiting for the dr. to call, and see what the prognosis will be, or if after all the test done here, we still don't know, and he wants me to go to a specialist 100 miles from here. no answers yet.

@kittyloo I'm probably a lot like you. I don't even buy extended warranties, and I've never regretted that.

As I read your email, I thought addisons. I am on my second addison dog and she can be managed quite well. My first addisonian lived till 14 years 11 months old. My second addisonian is still with me and is 14 years 3 months. I will say that I am on top of her health always. She takes two pills a day and prescription food. I never give anything but her prescription food. I will also say that vets recommend percorten (shot) every month. I find I can manage her on the fludrocortisone pills much easier. With pills every day same time her levels don't go up and down and it is cheaper for my size dog (westie). Please insist on the addison's test and let us know.

I did the math, too, on that post. Had the money been put in a special savings account, there would have been money to pay for all of the surgery costs and the other dog’s bills with plenty left over. But I understand that things can go awry early in a dog’s life, and if a person was saving money for vet expenses, the money wouldn’t be there yet.

I also wanted to mention that there are cases of distemper going around in dogs that have been religiously vaccinated on time, every time.
These don't sound like the symptoms at this point, but its something to keep in mind.
My Aussies come from a top breeder and shower in the country. One of her dogs was ill and they did every test imaginable and sent her to a canine neurologist. Many hundreds of dollars later they tested her for distemper because of a friend's having gone through the same thing.
It turns out that it IS possible for vaccinated dogs to get it. It is not likely and not something that comes along frequently. But they went through months of not knowing what was wrong with one of her bitches and almost lost her. The vet didn't think a distemper test was necessary but my breeder pushed for it and said they had nothing to lose at that point. Sure enough, she tested positive. It took a year for her neurological symptoms to go away but she is doing great now.

Im so sorry to hear about your sweet Geena. It's very frustrating trying to figure out what is happening with our beloved pets. We spent quite a bit at vet trying to figure out what was going on with our 10 year old Husky. Went in for annual physical the end of April. Everything was good. Vets remarked Bandit Looked Great! Then suddenly he started a downward spiral. Went for ultra sounds, xrays all types of blood work including testing for Cushings. Even after all the testing Vet couldn't figure out what was wrong. Had to say goodbye to him In June. I don't regret the money we spent, just wish we could have saved him. I hope you get some good news about your Geena.

care credit might be an option if you vet accepts it

well, princess geena, is back from the vet again. everything is still "fairly" normal. calls are out from the dr. to the specialist just for ideas or perhaps avenues. they did give her a steroid type injection, to see if it is addisons, then this will make her bounce back a bit. we were also able to capture a little bit of urine for them to test. they were unable to get any buy mama got a little. so tomorrow i will phone to see if the urinalysis showed anything of signifigance.
oh, and i brought home a doggy diaper (with a tail hole) just in case. we won't be having another bed episode!! so now we wait. the bill today wasn't nearly as bad as i thought it might be, so that's good. maybe this will all work out. i can only hope and pray

@kittyloo wrote:so my little girl geena, (min pin/chihuahua) was acting funny. shivering, odd bladder control things, a list of things.
took her to the vet, and her temp was 93. 93!!! super low, lethargic host of things. anyway. she spent the day at the vet, getting fluids and tests.then was good enough to come home and be watched, and get antibiotics.
dr. was stumped as to what was going on. two days later, and she is back at the vet. she shivers alot, won't get off the couch, acts like she can't fully empty her bladder, although a urine test was done, and it was normal. she is alert, and will eat (when delivered to her highness on the couch) only the choicest of morsels. and drink,, yes, delivered in a dixie cup to the princess pillow. more tests today. he said we may have to go to a specialist if he just can't determine.
so dh and i sorta had the discussion of how much is too much to spend on her medical care. ugh. we are not rich by any means. first round of test and stuff was $525. which i gladly paid. and will do again. but i'm just not in the position to pay multiple thousands of dollars. how do you put a $ on a beloved pets life? it may not come to that, but i have to be realistic as well. addisons has been bandied about, but she doesn't have all the symptoms. they just don't know yet. all i can do is pray. sigh. (((
@kittyloo So sorry that your “princess” isn’t doing well. It can get expensive and fortunately we’ve always had pet insurance on all our dogs. Never mind that, though. We live near a university with a vet school that sees pets for free or next to no cost...the almost graduate vets are always supervised by their full vet professors. There are also specialists there where folks take their animals and pay top dollar...If a school is teaching vetenary medicine and can’t find a diagnosis....well, there may be a school or clinic w/ reduced prices in your area. Good luck with her.
