That exact thing happened to my daughter, ten years ago. She had two black cats who were brothers.
On Halloween, the cats went out at night and one did not return.
She was afraid that someone pulled a Halloween prank and stole her black cat.
She looked all over the neighborhood and no one had seen the cat. She spent a couple hundred dollars on flyers and newspaper ads, in our city and the city next to us.
She got a few calls, but when she went to see the found cats,
none were hers. About a month later, a woman in the next city called her about a cat that she had found. She took it to the vet and there, she saw the flyer for the lost cat. This cat was not well, somewhat emaciated and had kidney issues.
My daughter thought that it was her cat, now sick and took it for veterinary care and medications that it needed. This cat settled in with the other cat and their dog.
Well, about four months later, the dog was in the kitchen and went to the back door after hearing something outside. My daughter opened the door and in walked her missing cat. He went right to the food dish and ate.
Now she had three black cats. She could not believe that her
cat came home after four months.
We think that someone in the neighborhood found him and took him in. He must have been kept inside through the winter
and when he was let outside, he found his way home.
We thought that it was an amazing story. She was so happy to
have her cat back.

I guess it's possible. I found it and thought it would be an interesting share here.
Personally, I think the original cat did this on purpose.
He recently found out about his long lost brother and worked out a way to leave, put his brother in their owner's path, and then show up weeks later.
What we have here is a family reunion between brothers that haven't seen each other in YEARS.

Isn't that just like a cat to walk in the door four months later and head for the food dish ... like he's only been gone for an hour? LOL
I can see people getting all excited and the cat looking around at them, thinking ... "What's the matter?" lol
