I had my dog to the vet yesterday for an ongoing issue with the underside of his paw. The vet ended up giving him a steroid injection and an antibiotic injection plus sent me home with a week's worth of oral antibiotic and a topical to put on a few times a day for the next week. We crate our dog every night. This morning when I came down, same time as usual, his entire backside was wet and the floor of his crate had a puddle. He's never ever done this before so I'm wondering if it's the antibiotic? I'll be sure to get him out earlier and take him out more often while he's on the meds. Giving him a hose bath on the patio was quite an experience at 8AM. I'm just glad I had some WEN Pets to use on him.

The steroid will cause more frequent urination.
My boxer was on predisone for the last couple of years of her life. She drank more water and urinated more.
Long term steroid use can cause liver damage.
Predisone is given for short periods and is eased off slowly. With only one steroid injection, the after effects will eventually wear off.

The steroid and/or antibiotic could be making him more thirsty. I would definitely call the vet and find out possible side effects. If he was given a shot of depo - thirst is a factor as is hunger. Depo medrol can also affect the kidneys especially if the animal is older.

Ahh, so it's the steroid. Thanks for the replies, ladies. I'll be sure to take him out more often and get him out earlier in the AM. I felt bad for him this morning, laying there in it, he looked like he was humiliated about the whole thing. Poor guy.

For goodness sake, call your vet and ask if this could be a problem. Any answers you get should come from the doctor, not those of us on the Board.
I know we all like to help, and we all know that Steroids can cause frequent urination, but this is your precious pet and you need to ask the right person.

I have a female collie who was rescued from a hoarder in Texas just one year ago this weekend. After she was spayed she developed an autoimmune disorder (almost died) and was put on 20mg daily of Prednisone. Over the year, I've managed to wean her down to 5mg but any less and she relapses. She drinks tons of water and not only urinates frequently, but she has bladder overflow. Everywhere she lies, she leaves a damp (or more) spot on the floor. Fortunately she doesn't get on any furniture. Yes, Prednisone definitely has an effect on urination.

@Kachina624 What a fortunate girl, that you were able to take her in. Bless you for your patience in caring for her. The "overflow" would likely be a deal breaker for a lot of people.
